fluid drive question

    the fluid drive transmission will not go into 1st .it goes easy into all other gears.anybody got any knowedge on these transmissions.its got 34000 miles on it and the first two owners were retired when they got it so abuse is out.i figure ill change the fluid a couple times to clean it out. thanks

    You also have a fluid coupling that needs changing too.

    thanks for the info at the fluid drive site.there was nothing wrong with my shifter.it only has low and high not 1,2,and 3rd like i thought.i'm learning something new everyday

    its in a 1950 desoto deluxe .its a kool car

    Leadsled I have a 50 Chrysler it also has a fluid drive.
    Its a coloum shift there is no 1st gear position like a 3 speed stick. Its just reverse-2nd and 3rd.When you take off in what normally is second that activates 1st gear. You then let off the gas you will hear a click step on the gas again now your in second.Then you manually shift in third.
    I have come to leave it in the 3rd gear position with the clutch out and just step on the gas (your in second gear) let off the gas step on it and yer in 3rd. 1st gear is way low, takes off in second much better. -Feder

    Check out the Desoto board I mentioned above. There's quite a few on there, including the webmaster, who have 50's and they know those trannies pretty good.

    thanks for the info on how to drive the desoto.its the first fluid drive i've run into.hopefully i'll get the tires[the old ones put on in 55 ,i have the reciept lol] and brakes done this month and i'll be driving by july.

    thanks again FEDER, what fluids do you use in the trans and converter?hopefully i'll take it around the block today.
