Projects Fluid matic. Overdrive?

    Would it be possible to have an overdrive unit on a chrysler m6? Just kinda curious if its possible because it's not really a manual or an automatic. Mostly just discussion rather than actually doing.

    Few things are 'impossible', but this is certainly in the realm of very difficult to add to the M6 trans. It might be possible to replace the M6 with a Mopar manual 3 speed with overdrive (if you can locate one). The Fluid Drive models, not M6's, used a fluid coupling like the M6, but had manual three speeds behind them.

    I have converted two Mopars to fully manual trans, one was a Fluid Drive the other a Gyro-Matic (M6) by replacing everything from the flywheel back with manual parts. One of the conversions included using an OD trans. The bellhousing is the same for any/all of the Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler models of that era. It is longer than the Plymouth until the '53/early '54 Hy-Drive, a Fluid Drive like contraption that was neither fish nor fowl.

    But, back to your question.....I think you would have to replace the M6 with a manual O/D trans ...at a minimum.
    What I am not sure of is the input shaft configuration of the Fluid Drive manual trans models, or if the fluid coupling for M6 models is the same as for Fluid Drive versions. though I expect that is the same.

    If this was 1968 instead of 2018 there would a lot of salvage yard availability of parts to investigate and determine compatibility, but those days are long gone. Today, if I wanted an automatic with OD, I'd get an adapter and put in a late model transmission.

    I think it's a 2 speed manual, with a compound 2 speed automatic. At least, that's how I remember it.

    Anyways, changing the rear end gear ratio would be how I'd go about adding "overdrive". Or, just get used to the rpm, because that's how those old cars are.
