What's next? Drilling holes in the wheels and filling the tires with helium?

Funny you should mention that ........ :D

I've been doing some homework on the possibility of poking holes in the front wheel centers. So far, the linear geometry's good, but I don't have the lateral numbers I need for a locked full width rear end yet (that puts quite a side load on'em when turning). It looks like it's possible, just need to get the pattern right.

Can't afford Helium. Perhaps Hydrogen, and re-naming'er the Hindenbrick?

Finished up another crown shave on the hides (I'm being conservative on these, don't want to ruin'em), moved the bucket hook forward out of the way of entry & egress, and am making the glove box a bit larger to fit the arm restraints in as well. Tossed on a spot of wax, Tink's looking pretty spiffy now.

Don't know about the wheel centers, but recall seeing rims full of 1/4" holes in the old days. Don't know how tech would look at either, even if you had engineering data to back it up. Tread less front tires might take a bit off.

What if you took the tyres off the rims completely. Imagine the weight saving. Let's face it, you're only driving in a straight line anyway. Or melt down some plastic milk bottles and make pistons out of them. Recycling at it's best.
On a lighter note, Round 4 at Sydney this Saturday 21st. I'll keep youse posted.

Hmmmm. Steel's more massive than rubber, wonder if I could just lace the hides directly to the centers, and omit the rims?

We have our second (of four) ANRA meet this weekend as well, here's to wins for all of us. :D

Have it on good authority, (Hambsterlady sent me a message) that Old6 is doing well at the ANRA meet. Ran a best time and speed so far for the car of 12.842 @ 107.02 and is bringing home the "HAMBIE" trophy! :D

Ya (440), sounds like that new clutch is hooking up way better adding new numbers to the record book.

Sure was not the good air this weekend, 100 deg both days, C. A. must have been in the 4500 - 5500 ft range.

  9. Congrats Old6, on the new personal best and the HAMBIE!!

Good to hear. It must be a case of the Aussie clutch grabbing in the right places.

A very good third hand report on the new, high performance of the Lighter Than Air Brick. Way to go!

Another great weekend at Butch's ANRA races. Good racing, good friends, good time. :D

It was in the short 100's all weekend, but there was a nice breeze also blowing all weekend as well, that made it decent. Still, I was sorely tempted to take a running flop into the swimming pool some wag kept towing about the pits on a trailer.

During first round ANRA Quals on Saturday, Jeana and I lined up to also settle our Eagle Field's left over "2 out of 3 match race" run and simultaneously the first round of this meet's HAMBie competition (thus relegating Joe to the first round bye ), technically a "threefer" for us. o_O
Despite the new clutch I didn't rush my shifts, not trusting it just yet on it's first outing. I turned in a 13.231 @ 103.21, and we got in a nice race, with only a 1/4 sec seperating us at the end, but I managed to take it.

Second Qual, Joe and I lined up for the HAMBie run. I picked up the tach a bit more for the launch, hit the gears quicker & harder (the new clutch working great, and allowing it :D), and pushed'er all the way through the traps (netting new numbers for the 'Brick, the 12.842 @ 107.02 that 440 mentioned), but the whole time wondering where the hell Joe was. He should've freight-trained by me before the 60' as usual.
As I was in the courtesy lane, I waited at the turn-off 'til he finally rolled by, pulled alongside on the return road, and while we dug ourselves out of our harnesses, asked the obvious questions.
Came out that he'd launched in the wrong gear and killed it, re-flamed it on the track, and set out to chase me down (rather in earnest, to say the least). He hit the 60' at 5.219 seconds, and the traps at 15.594 @ 118.99, for what HAS to be a record of some kind. The man was catagorically flying after me. Damn glad he didn't have a pair of 50's mounted.

Saturday evening we all celebrated Colleen's (and Joe's) Birthdays (with some of Joe's best ribs yet), and bench raced under the McFarland stars.

Sunday started off with a surprisingly quick call for Open Wheel class, so we hurried and matched up (I drew Jerry and his really sweet "T" altered), hit the lanes and waited our turn. And waited our turn. And waited our turn ......
Apparently they'd shuffled the schedule a bit, re-shuffled it a bit, etc.
Finally they remembered that we were there, and included us in the day's festivities.

Well, someone'd had enough time to get their HAMBster Voodoo dolls well & properly needled, and we all three went out first round. Joe and Jeanna each fell to the godless red eye, then I got out ahead far enough to get worried, lift before the traps, and with two feet of strip left, get properly freight-trained by Jerry (he's good, you just don't screw up like that when he's in the other lane :()
A true gentleman too, he came by my pit afterward to thank me for waiting up for him. :D

Kay and I had decided to attend our Granddaughter Sammi's grad party should I lose early enough, so we packed up, said our goodbye's and left. And in so doing, missed getting to watch Mike win Open Wheel (and add 50 points to his '14 ANRA resume ).

Had a great time, as we always do at Butch's meets, and we're already looking forward to August's ANRA.

If you are going to lose on a race like that, break out and run your best. Don't ever lift! :p

    .071, .034, & .049. :)

Yeah, she was hooking up nicely, including the top end. I'll shave the crowns another .100" at the Pit next Sunday, and see if it helps on a bit looser strip. Looking to get'er tied down better at the next Eagle Field of course.

Also plan to add a skosh more travel to the clutch arm after the Pit. It's opening up just a bit too close to the stop at the moment, though still doing the job right. I like a bit more over-travel, both for launch and for shifts. As to pressure, Hemi Performance claims a 40% boost over a stocker, and it certainly feels & drives like it.

OK, Kleet took the coolest shot yet of the 'Brick at Bako. I've switched out the one in the thread header, made it my desk top background, and've ordered one in the flesh for framing on my toy room wall. :D

    This one ......

    Thanks, Kleet.

    Well kiddies,

Have it all together, and am off to get some rack. Hitting the bricks for the Pit tomorrow at 0630.
Four Ever Fours Club's Antique Nationals, here I come.

Yes, that's a great composition. The bleachers look like a 160 mph blur.

The pic can only be as good as the subject and the Brick looks perfect.

    Have fun at Fontana.

Thank you, Gentlemen. Fun was decidedly had. :D

The day was strange, I forgot my hat, my cameras (sorry, our illiterati'll just have to fake it), and had to loan my shoes to a club member who forgot his own for tech. But the 'Brick ran GREAT, and I managed to almost look like an actual bracket racer ...... sort of.

There were a gazillion flatties & inliners there, as always, but a surprisingly small handful in the non-street flattie & inline bracket #6 class. There were only 7 to begin with, and 4 of'em didn't stay for elims (see "below"), leaving the 'Brick, the Antique Doll, and Unsprung Elmer's car to fight for the class. Quals went strange right off the bat. The 'Doll had'er brand new engine, first time out, so was inconsistent as they worked to get'er dialed in of course. She also got quite sideways on'er first qual pass, having to shut off, and then get back into it. Elmer's car was having traction problems, and a bit of a struggle keeping'er straight as well. I took the 'Brick out for a 13.211 @ 103.91 & .069 rt first pass, using my old conservative launch, and having to stab third twice. My second qual, with the new launch, and hitting the gears decently, netted a 12.853 @ 107.15 & .078. :)

Lunch break, and on into elims, I dialed 12.800. With just the 3 of us to duke it out, we hit the lanes with me in the lead, and Elmer & the 'Doll behind. As the two of'em wanted to match up (two flattie rails, one seriously cool stage ), I got the bye, and posted a 12.895 @ 107.08 & .083. Elmer took their race when the 'Doll flattened out a bit on the top end.

Round two, and Elmer trailered up & hit the bricks. o_O ???
    So I hit the lanes, made and a second solo flight, turning in a 12.944 @ 106.57 & .067.

So ...... the 'Brick ran 12's, I didn't actually race anyone, I won my class, and they took a picture of the 'Brick, myself, Tom & Patti, and a wall trophy & T-shirt.

Did I mention that the day was strange?

    "below"
There were also several time-outs for assorted hardware on the strip, two nasty wrecks, a couple more delays for ???, and an extended lunch "break" (apparently just for the hell of it). So a fair handful of folks didn't stay for elims, cutting two of the classes to just a few cars.

Did I mention that the day was strange?

Also, several of us from the group that run in Open Wheel up at Butch's Bakersfield ANRA meets were in several of the brackets here, and when the smoke cleared owned four of the six classes among us (yes, the other three classes were better contested).

Did I mention that the day was strange?

Finally, as I was tanking the Dodge up at a near by station for the trip to the float barn, I got to chat with one of the guys that help run the strip (also filling at the diesel pumps). A nice guy, and seemed genuinely happy that I'd had a great time at their meet.

    All in all ......

As Dick said, the day was strange, the Brick II ran great, the elimination rounds were strange and he is beginning to look like an effective bracket racer. Oh yeah...The day was strange.
All that said it was fun crewing and great being there for his first "class/bracket" win...
Even if the day was strange.

Sounds like a very 'interesting' day all round. The main thing was you were having a good time but it's always better to run against someone. Congratulations on the win.
It's a pity I live more than a short drive from you as I'll run against ya.

Oh yeah, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the Brick is running consistent high 12s now and Dick is smiling a lot. :)

"Interesting" certainly covers it conservatively. :D

And we'd need to outfit our cars with "somewhat" larger gas tanks, and some record setting sand paddles to start crossing the pond to run together.
At least coolin'em'd be no sweat.

    Hmmmm. :)

By the way, what altitude is it where you race? I'm not that pedantic about tuning accordingly but just curious.

    Fontana's oval track start/finish line's listed at 1121.27'.
The strip's not listed seperately, but likely's only a few feet lower.
