Hi, Some may be aware that I am currently working on ***embling an 8ba to put into my 46 SD Coupe. I am very appreciative of all of the ***istance I have received so far. I am looking for insight in to the flywheel situation. I have obtained the necessary bell housing and starter plate, but I'm not certain about what flywheel to use. Will the flywheel from my 59AB work on the 8ba to mate with my original manual trans? Thanks in advance!!
You'll need an 8BA flywheel. The offset is different and the early wheel will likely rub on the back of the newer block as well as the starter to ring gear spacing being different.
Yep, 8BA pressure plate bolt holes are drilled through. Earlier are blind. They will bolt up, but they won't work. Found out myself the hard way.
Regarding the clutch, I ***ume that I cannot use the clutch and pressure plate that was originally installed on the 59AB on the 8BA flywheel? Also, since I am a TOTAL novice with this, what sort of spacers or other parts will I need when attaching the flywheel to the motor?
After removal of the motor, I read the part number stamped on my clutch. 29A-7550. Interweb tells me that it is a 10" clutch disc. Several questions: 1. Should I ***ume that an 8ba flywheel drilled for a 10" clutch will work with this and the pressure plate, etc? 2. I am having some trouble removing the lower bellhousing on my 59ab. Any pointers as to how best to make this work? Thanks, as always.
A 10” flathead clutch should bolt up to all flathead flywheels with a 10” bolt pattern. Except the 8CM flywheel which probably has the diaphragm clutch pattern. The bottom part of a 59A bellhousing is welded to the oil pan. It should be very hard to remove separately.
Ha! Thanks for that. I took off the clutch and the pressure plate. I’m hoping that these can be reused on the 8BA flywheel.
The pressure plate has heat marks. Not really bad, but they are there. If you are in a big metro, you might have a clutch rebuilding shop that can surface it.
