Hey all, my name is Rob and I live in Central, PA. I recently picked up a '50 4-door. A previous owner had grafted a late '60s GM clip in the front. Didn't do a real good job so I am in the process of researching and comparing different frames and/or front clips. I recently fell into a deal on a complete '70 T-bird with a 429 and C6. It only has 30K original miles and the wheelbase is within 3"s of matching my 'merc. Anyway, when I got it, the 'merc was about 5 different colors. My buddy and I spent a couple of days of welding, priming, filling and sanding. Right now it has a 4-ish" chop, lays frame on 22" wheels, has a '50 Buick jetback front bumper (that I cut down), a smoothed stock dash and bucket seats from a '96 jeep grand cherokee. Here are some pics... And now how it looks after we primered it Great to be here, looking forward to learning new stuff and meeting new people.
love what you have done with the car.. but please expect to get some flack for those silly wheels.. I've been trying to talk a mercury owner into cutting his top off completely.. your roofline makes me reconsider.. got any pics of the structure of the B pillar?
Thanks for the welcome everyone! I had steelies on it when we were painting it but the look didn't suit me. My plan is to black the wheels out too so that I still have the big wheel look without the bling. Here is what it looked like with the steelies on during paint...
Haven't been on in a while. Have recently had some more time to spend on the 'merc. Trying to find the cord for my camera so that I can upload some new pics but here's a quick list of what we've done: - the big wheels are gone now. Fronts are Centerline Auto Drag 15x7 and the rears are 15x13. Running 31x16x15 Mickey Thompson SRs in the rear. - Built a complete new frame from 2x4 tubing complete with an X-brace center section - C-Notch rear so that it will still lay frame even with the wide rear tires - Narrowed the rear 9" to a total width of 35"s - Started building the tubs for the rear since the previous owner completely cut out the trunk floor and rear section of the floor I'm down in MD visiting family but I will get new pics posted as soon as I can
Bking Wheels ain't my thing...............but it's your car, everybody has their own thing, that's why we change our rides like we like them. Do your own thing! Welcome from Georgia
Thanks a lot! I'm with ya there. Rest assured the big bling wheels are gone. LOL. I'll have some new pics on here by this weekend.
Damn fine build so far! Glad to hear you are ditching the Bling wheels. Everything here is geared a little more traditional..............But I will stand by the your car, your thing stuf all day
Ok, I found a cable to work with my digital camera. Here is the new center and rear section of frame that I made. The front clip is all, stock '70 T-bird with the 429 and C6 still sitting in the T-bird mounts. Also, you can see the Ford 9" that I narrowed to fit. I still need to build the 4-link arms and the airbag mounts. I also need to swap the front coils out for the airbags but right now, if my measurements are right, I will still be able to lay frame.
