Greetings from the sunny hills of Colorado. If FNG stands for what I suspect it does, that's me, F-ing New Guy. I need to come up the learning curve here as well as learn more about the ins and outs of building my idea of a rod. That would be a low-buck (if that's possible) car that I guess would be referred to as a Lo-Bucker - in my case, not much power and maybe even less chrome. We'll see how it goes. Thanks, Dugg
Dammit Dugg...quit telling eveyone it's sunny here...they all think we're buried in snow...let 'em keep thinking that...don't need anymore people moving in here! And FNG is exactly what you think it is... And "rat rod" are fighting words around here...we're all into "traditional" rods... And you can build a rod "low-buck" as most of us do around here...no billet, little chrome and sparse shiney cars (altho I prefer shiny paint over the more popular flat black)and most of it is done the old fashioned way...DIY!!! And 'power' is a relative state of mine... Where are you? I'm in Aurora and there's lots of ColoRODo guys on here...so, welcome. R-
Welcome aboard the good ship USS-HAMB! In regard to your "budget" question regarding Hot Rods, if I couldn't do it as "cheaply" as I have so far, I wouldn't be able to do it at all! The only cost compromise I WON'T make is that of safety. It has GOT to be safe, no matter what the cost may be. I'm just too damned old to allow myself to get hurt!, and I don't have to drive like a Bat outa' Hell to have fun! Good Luck in whatever you may decide to do! There's a lotta' rock-solid advice here ( not necessarily MY advise ) that you can use as an on-going resource. Cruise often!...Cruise well!
Hey guys, thanks for the welcome. Maybe I should describe the car I hope to be able to build so I see if I'm in sync with the group and to determine the class of rod I'm envisioning. It's a '27 T Roadster/Lakester type car. I was hoping for no chrome, but may go for chrome smoothie/genie wheels as they are cheaper chromed than if I had them powder coated. I'm building the frame; dropped I-Beam, quarter elliptec front springs, rack & pinion steering (so far)), Olds Quad 4 motor with standard trans, S-10 or ? rear end under an old buggy spring. I like the design of the Old Dog/ Main Street Rods 27 body. I think I'm getting passing marks so far. Now the bad news, I have already made some parts on my own. I made front caliper brackets. They are made out of aluminun and I made'em on a CNC mill. So, I guess that's called billet. And, I'll be making many more parts, brackets, etc., out of the same material on the same mill. This doesn't sound very traditional does it? Am I going to flunk out of the H.A.M.B.?
NOT if you paint them blak instead of polishing them... Just so you know, there's a lot of craftsmen on this board...making every one of the parts they need, out of nearly anything...it's just that the "billet" label got stuck on all those six figure 1-800 cars or the ones "pro-built" and shiny...nothing wrong with pro-built cars as there are a lot of pro builders here as well...it's just that it's not flaunted here. Sounds like the car you are building will fit in here quite well... So, you live in Denver, Springs, Greeley...or Bennett or on the other side of the hills? R-
Sorry StudeDude, I forgot to add that I'm in Bailey. That's out Hwy 285... Hwy 285 you know, the White Trash Grand Prix. That's what I'm going to call my book if I ever get around to it. A book on driving for CRM's... Colorado Road******s. And thanks for the insight into my project your vote of confidence that I'm on the right track. Be sure to kick my***** hard if I stray. Thanks, Doug
Hey, if you are MAKING the parts out of chunks of billet, you're probably alright with me. (who am I though?) If, however, you're buying blister packed billet parts, you may be in for it with the people on this board! ha I lived in Montrose years ago, nice place.
