Does any body no what other tranny would fit a 1958 edsel engine its a 361 dont have the original want something quick want to drive it already engine is all done what else would work:D

  2. Is it push button shift or lever shift?

If lever, any CRUISE-O-MATIC of the period (58-60). The 58 EDSEL only used the Single-Range (actually a FORDOMATIC). The 58 FORD used both and the shift indicator and linkage for the DUAL-RANGE may be able to be used on the EDSEL.

A FE C6 would work on it also. Would have to make a few modifications.

As mentioned above, the cast-iron Cruise-o-Matic and FE C6 are good choices.

If you are interested in a more modern trans, there are vendors that can adapt the AOD. It has its advantages (overdrive), but is likely to be somewhat more expensive.

If you have a preference for GM transmissions, there are adapters available for them as well; maybe a good choice, but probably not too cheap.

  4. Great idea, but as mentioned, expensive.

    See adaptor below-
