I have a, what seems to be, 49-54 chevy car 4dr front seat in my 53 p/u.
It fits nicely, but it doesn't tilt forward and is too "thick" against the back of the cab.
AND, I'm fat! so, I need to know if anyone has ever used something that fits well, and isn't such a mammoth seat.
maybe a 88-92 GM truck seat?or other ideas would be appreciated..thanks

  2. A late model full sized pickup bench might be a little wide.
Try looking at an S-10 bench. or perhaps an early Dodge dakota.
Haven't tried it but they might be a good starting place.

  3. Awhile back there was a post where people measured seats and kinda made a list of dimensions from various vehicles. I have an '89 Fullsize Chevy in my very frozen drive and a '93 Dakota too....if you want I can measure seats for you but let it be known that I have delicate skin and frostbite may ruin my ***life.

thanks guys. and Curly, **** it up man, put on some winter "protection" and take a measurement or two [IMG]

  6. Damn... Windchill factor is 7 degrees outside...this must be some sorta sickness when you will happily go outside and measure seats for a stranger??? [IMG]

    88-93 Fullsize Chevy /GMC truck:
Seat Base: 59" wide 24" front to back and 6" thick
Seat Back: 59" wide 23" tall 5" thick in lumbar area and tapers up to 3" at the top. No headrests.

    93 Dodge Dakota
Seat Base: 49" wide 23" front to back and 6" thick
Seat Back: 49" wide 20" tall 5" thick in lumbar area and tapers up to 4" at the top. Has headrests (but can be pulled out).

I had a '51 Chebby and I tossed the original seat cushions and seat frame in the trash after carrying to swapmeets for a couple of years.

If your interested in an original there is a guy near Canfield (near Youngstown) that has a yard full of these trucks. I can look his number up and give it to you.

cool, thanks stranger..I'll compare that to what's in the truck.
And, I'm only 5-10 minutes from Canfield and Youngstown, so shoot me that number when you can. I may even know who/where it is....later

  8. Grumpy ....we're runnin Dakota seats in ours. I did have the guy that covered mine add 3 inches (foam) to the top of mine. When you sit them on the floor the back is a little low.

my dad has a late model(90's) chevy in his 51 and my uncle has a s10 in his 50,,i think the late model fits the porportions better, but looks to modern, the S10 bench looks like it fits, but its a not as wide (oh yeah the S10 seat it mounted to a piece of plywood that fits the old seat mountingframe so

  10. Forgot to mention that I cut the old seat mount out and mounted the seat directly to the floor. Puts your shoulder about level with the bottom of the window.

In my '52 pickup I have a 60's Ranchero bench seat...
the one with a one-piece bottom and a split back...
makes it nice to get behind the seat a little easier...
sits you kinda low, but my truck is chopped 6+ inches...
plenty of headroom, but you aren't stretching to see out of
    the doors or windshield either...
at the junkyard I think it was under $40...
    oh yeah, I'm 6'1" and 220lbs...

    hope that helps..!!

For the slimest seat and for plenty of "gut" clearance I would say and s-10 seat may be one to look into and measure. Not sure what mounting was used but I've seen these work well (height/width) in the old trucks.

I think brother likes Chrysler K car seats as he has used them in these trucks and they look and fit well. I have a Granada seat in mine and I like the way it looks and the size is right but I do not think it sits as good as others. Of course the reason I used the Granada is like a lot of the rest of my truck, I had it, it was free.

You could install buckets and give yourself some storage space in the middle. Here I used late 60's GM seats.

Grumpy, I have used mid 80's Dodge 600 front seats in two of the late 47 to early 55 style trucks. I use the front seat from a 4-door. Thet have a center arm rest and are very comfortable. They don't tilt forward but you have plenty of rear cab access through the armrest area and at the ends. They have extra support in the lower back (lumbar ) area. We have been in the trucks for 10-12 hour days and had no fatigue. The seats are built very well. I mount the seats with the front legs 2-3 inches higher than the rear. Ideally the top of the front of the seat should touch your legs just behind the knees for best comfort. I mounted the first one directly on top of the factory truck seat riser. My current truck has the seat mounted on risers. The late 80's full size GM pickup seats look really good but are a little wide. They touch the doors at the front corner so could be a problem when installing finish door panels. The K-car seats sell for $30-35.00 but are starting to get hard to find as alot of these cars have already been crushed. I wouldn't think the S-10 seats would be as comfortable. The Dodge product seats seem to be built better so take a look at the Dakota seats as others have mentioned. Good Luck. Sam
