actually i was looking up "oddball motors" i kinda have a fascination with wierd stuff... found a guy on here with a reverse flow chevy, and i guess a few ohc conversion and such, thats wat i really want to do, the more i looked the more i liked, I'm inot cars, really, and i see a lot of people here are inot cars, not just traditional hotrods, and ive seen people get bitched at for asking question that are non-hamb friendly, but they always get helped.... thats the best part about this site, maybe thats why some older guys dont post anymore? and well the people here actaully have been doing this forever(some of them)and are willing to help, and you always get both sides of the picture witch is invaluable when building something

"THE RODDERS JOURNAL" took me to "THE JALOPY JOURNAL" which led to the "HAMB". I was very quickly impressed by the talent here, great metal work and fabrication, art, event coverage, and tech articles with real meat to them.

    Thanks

  7. Several folks on stovebolt.com had mentioned the HAMB, so I figured I'd visit...now it's the auto forum I frequent most.

By looking for parts for a 291 Hemi oddly enough... The place just kinda grew on me like an out of control wart, so I figured, why fight it? Just admire and enjoy it!

I have been a lurker for about 4 years, just kinda read through the threads every once in a while, checked in about once a week and then decided to build another car recently and joined, I have owned 17 custom 49-51 mercs over the years and several rods so I have been around them my whole life, but not on the net. Pretty cool board, seems there are some old timers on here, the guys that remember what customs and rods were about, not the ratrod crap and that is what I was looking for. Jim

i'm not a FNG in status, but in HAMB history i'm kinda late to the game.
    here's my deal...
i believe the first time i became aware of the HAMB was an article in R&C about a guy that was gonna run a SBC w/o oil to see what would happen and take wagers on when it would happen.
i looked up and discovered this board. i never signed up because it seemed the threads moved so fast and it was hard for me to keep up. looking back that may be true,or my computer access was dial up, so my puter was slow. i dunno.
a year or 2 later i decided i wanted to join, but at taht time i saw pretty much every new guy get his ass handed to him. i didnt need that kind of misery, so i stayed a lurker.
jump forward another year or 2 i saw a thread about virginia members. i signed up rite than.

We got our first computer in 97. When my wife would leave e-bay or the beanie baby sites. I would search for custom cars, tri-five Chevy’s. So I lurked for a long time before signing up.

  21. ...Amen here...there isn't much to ask...almost anything I wanted to know or see can be found by learning the ins and outs of the almighty search engine...I've lurked here for years and every time I think it hasn't been covered, Google sends me right back to the HAMB...

..and ease up old HAMBers...just send us new guys a link if we ask something we can't find...please? with fuckin sugar on top? the post will be gone in 20 minutes anyway!!

Did a google search for "hotrods". And the HAMB was one of the sites that came up. I lurked for a year or so, then joined.

I really have no idea the context of the orginal post. But I have wanted to rant about this for some time. I hate being called and FNG. But I know the deal after being the military, its just a power trip for people who have "been there and done that". But if people only knew how much I hate asking for anything, even advice. I loath it. Even more so about a subject that isnt trendy, sorry i dont have a F*ing Flathead V8, I have a straight 6, So shove it. So I dont give a shit if I ever become a Bulletin Board Ranger, or a newbie, or whatever, it doesnt mean shit.

With that said I didnt mean to come off too harsh, but like i said it has rubbed me the wrong way for some time.

I'm still trying to figure out what FNG and Newbie means. I never had the Newbie title, and I 'think' I am an FNG. Ha! So please fill me in. Cindy

  26. It's "welcome, new guy/girl". Post a few more times, and the FNG goes away. You are former military; you should know how to deal with annoying shit, shouldn't you? I've been fucking around, working on cars and trucks since 1972, and when I got on here, guess what? I was an FNG, too! Quit whining, deal with it and learn and enjoy it here. Life's too damn short to sit there and bitch about something soooo insignificant.

Sanford - "FNG = Fu*king New Guy. You reach "Newbie" at 75 posts. Then "Grenade Inspector". "Member" occurs at 400 posts.

I'm in this same boat. A lot of useful information from guys with experience, but I'm not one of them. I'm a lurker soaking it all in without much to add of value.
