I just got my March issue of Hot Rod and it has an article about some guys from Montana building a roadster to set a record at Bonneville. They wanted to set a record for vintage 4 cyl. street roadster. The engine they used was a Dodge Brothers 1928 Fast Four. A one year engine. You know nothing in the way of speed equipment existed so they made it all. From grinding their own cam to casting an aluminum head. They set a record but it only lasted for 24 hours when a Model A 4 banger went 3 miles an hour faster. Good story.
Hi Roy. That will make it more interesting for next year. After going to all of that trouble, they will probaly both try harder next year.
Yeah I'm sure they will be back because they were going 9 mph over the record and spun out. I guess there wasn't enough time to try again. Most of the time at Bonneville you only have your alotted time to run and if you screw up you're through for the year. Roy
They were running at 108 to 117 mph which ain't bad for an 80 year old chunk of iron. This is with gasoline not fuel. He had just went through the first mile at 117 when he spun out. That was 9 mph over the record. The record he set the day before was 107 mph but it didn't hold. He ran in 2 classes one in street roadster with fenders and one in roadster without fenders. Also get the new Hotrod Deluxe magizine it has a great aticle on building up an Ford Model A 4 banger. It makes 140 hp which would really be a great HA/GR light weight contender. Roy
Yeah, I'd love to see them, IIRC I saw them in the tech line this year (all 2 miles of it). I finally found a copy of the March issue of Hot Rod, very cool. I like their definition of a "regular two car garrage' with what appears to be the remote for a trolley hoist in the upper part of the picture. I sure would like that tall a ceiling (I'd be able to use a lift ). Regardless, they'll get it sorted out (and a record or two) if they keep on it. Amazing results from a scratch built car, especially for such a short period of time.
