Did you ever think when you joined up that this site would become as well known as it is and have as many members?

Many years ago, you could post something, go out in the shop, build an engine, put it in the car, fire it up, break in the cam, go for a test drive, come back and no one would have posted anything while you were gone..

As fun as it was to be a part of a small group where every other post was "so and so is a hair *****" or "here is a picture of Mudd's Camero" the HAMB is WAY better now.

Definately a kinder, gentler HAMB. If you never got to read GERMS stream of conciousness rambling you missed out. I know guys that where afraid to join because of the *** whipping they knew they'd have to go through as newbies.

I started lurking about 2 years before I joined and felt like there was nothing I could add to what those old hambers were sayin. Now it seems like mostlnew guys like me asking dumb questions. Nice to get lotsa good answers though.

I remember lurking in terror! Took me forever to join. I just got tired of feeling left out and bit the bullet. Sometimes now, you could almost run a drinking game on "What's it worth" or "rr" posts!:D Still...hands down it's the BEST place on the internet!!

Ryan invented the net in 1968, but he only told the cool kids about it! :)

I think a lot of the guys in the beginning were like me: we had a fanatical love for old style modified cars, and were just happy to find like-minded souls. Only a small percentage of "car people" were into traditional type rides. so even at events, you flet out of place.
Now, I think it's more of a fad, life-style, trendy thing to do, so more many, many more people have jumped on the bandwagon. The "lifers" are still here, but seem to take more of a background involvement. Lots of drama, newbie questions, and arguements, etc, when it's not all people who have been into it for a long time.

I remember when I joined the first time back in about 2001 or 2002 you were able to choose your own handle but if I remember correctly a p***word was issued to you, I was scared as hell to do an intro and eventually forgot my p***word so I had to rejoin later under a new handle...

Ain't that the truth! It was nice to learn that I was not the only die hard that refused to let go. I'm kinda looking forward to being in the minority again when this all fades like the resto-rods and billet mobiles.:D Original dropped axles were dirt cheap when everybody just had to have the new Super Bell and 4 bar.

I looked up my number some time ago, when that particular thread went around the first time, but now I can't get it to work...I think I'm somewhere around 960...

I placed a cl***ified ad back when...I was immediately told I'd better do an intro before the "seniors" on the crew jumped my **** and tore me a new one...I hurriedly typed something up and posted it...it worked and I've been here ever since...

I am far from being a founding member but had I joined when I first found the hamb I could have been,,,why,,GERM of course,,he was a terror on NUBIES,,and when I did join,,I got ripped anyway,,part of the process at that time.

Rite of P***age,,and a INTRO was a must,,,you were screwed if you didn't post one!

    Yeah,,,a kinder,gentler Hamb nowadays.

I never dreamed it would grow to what it has today but that is by no accident ,,Ryan has worked his magic and it is because of his dedication and hard work the Hamb is one of the biggest and best sites on the internet.

I believe it will continue to grow. HRP

I would say that 85% of the people I call friends are hambers. So to answer your question. No.

I consider Ryan a visionary ....................or a cult leader....take your pick. By the way, please throw away your Kool Aid cup as you enter the cleansing booth.

  24. Gee, I remember reminiscing about the past just the other day
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=393365&highlight=original

Wednesday to be exact. Deja Vue ;)

But I do remember when I found this place 10 years ago that is was something special, in a shortbus kinda way. No offense to Shortbus however.

As for "founders" very feew of them here, it has been covered in the thread I linked. Most of us came in the SECOND WAVE that started in 99/2000

Roger shows you are # 913 but shows I am 1049 when actually I was in the 2700s. Somehow in changes it got changed.
    Shortbus is a visionary.
I'm not a founding member but been around for a while. I lurked for a year or so, finally had something to say so I sent a carefully worded intro.(thanks Roger for being nice to me!)
I found this place when someone on a Ford forum said something about those ***holes over on the HAMB. Took a look, discovered that I was not really crazy, there are others like me.
Back then I could spend 15 or 20 minutes a day and read everything. Not as crazy as it used to be.
I have several hundred friends that I have met because of the HAMB that I would have never met without this place, including 6 who are in this post. I'm proud to be part of a group that a hotel manager once referred to, while speaking to Ryan, as "your people".

The tech is better now, but it seemed general questions were answered faster back then. probably cause they didn't fly off the first page in 2 seconds and people got a chance to see them. There was a lot more OT stuff, but it was ll in good fun, and pretty damn entertaining too.

Fuelpump and Hatch got me to sign up. I'm in the first 700 so it was pretty new then. Right from the first I thought that Ryan had something special goin on here and time has proven it to be true.

Trent, how in hell do you do that...??? I think you're the fastest guy on here when it comes to pulling up old threads...****, I can't even remember the last thread I posted on, let alone finding one buried in the archives...I must be getting old...

  30. Let me say that I'm not a founding member, by any stretch. I lurked for years before I decided to join the ****** fray. I watched as newbies got ripped from stem to stern by GERM and others which was funny as hell to watch but I wanted no slilce of that grief pie, thanks.

When I joined it was a much slower pace and a lot more OT stuff that was often funny as hell. The HAMB was still not a warm fuzzy place to be at times, but it was a treasure trove of info I couldn't find anywhere else so I jumped in and here I am, thousands of smart aleck replies later.

Now though, I'm a bit overwhelmed by how big the HAMB is. To me, it's lost some of it's original 'garage party' atmosphere BUT the Tech is SOOO much better and more varied that this is still the place to get some info you can't find anywhere else. Liek a good buffet, I keep coming back, but not as often as I used to.
