Built a set of spindles to fit my 28 straight axle from a pair of 61 pontiac spindles.
To get them to fit the way i wanted, the spindle centerline is pretty much centered on the upper kingpin boss. The question is this- what effect is this dropped spindle arrangement going to to have on drivability?

  2. Let's have a photo from strait Top down, Horozontal with spindle to one side and one with spindle pointing strait at the camera.

most spindles , the spindle shaft favors the top of spindle clevis/boss, thats where the king is the strongest

@dana barlow has raised the critical issue- scrub radius. Post another photo like your fourth one showing a wheel and tire installed.

  14. I can see you have some skills no doubt. You probably already know about Scrub line. It's hard to tell with the photos you posted where that is exactly. It appears to be a good deal off but maybe the tires hide the fact you actually got it dead on. Contact point inboard of Tire tread will make them want to Toe Out while driving as you probably know. That's never good but is often accepted in the Hot Rod world. I'm no expert but I say keep going.
Seems we also have a little something else in common besides doing a little bit of Fab work.

Scrub radius does look a bit on the large size.

Any reason not to use Ford spindles? The Pontiac's wheel bearings are a fairly common combination (SET6/SET2 in my Timken catalogue) and the same for 8-lug and 5-lug wheels. If I remember correctly —I've got the information somewhere— the outer bearing fits directly on the Ford spindle and the inner needs a sleeve and probably a spacer to fit, but it's doable.

Edit: Found it. The inner bearings need to go over a very thin sleeve, 0.7685mm or .030" wall thickness, in order to fit onto an early Ford spindle. I don't have information on the comparative spindle lengths.

Dam clunky fingers. Anyhow, toe is 1/8. Ackerman is 6" long

As said before, fingers. scrub radius is actually less than a half inch.

  18. Well I be. A drop spindle.
Got pics of it all hooked up/steering.

    dig those wheels.

  19. I think your going to be fine. I can understand why you chose to do what you did. It's also a plus having the Anchor boss for the Pontiac brakes still in place. With the spindles having bolt on steering arms correcting the Ackerman shouldn't be a problem. I have many times hand built steering arms to do just that along with getting my steering ratio the way we want it lock to lock and stop to stop. Different steering gears often need a little help to make things at the steering wheel feel good. I don't like feeling like I have to wind up the gear box to get around the corner.

Doubting Thomas here wonders if you're sure about that as the pics seem to indicate otherwise, but could be the camera angle????
