I hope you all make it through this storm unharmed. We´ve had storms and heavy floods earlier this year but everything was over after a few hours. I can´t imagine going through this for almost a week! Stay safe . We´ll keep our fingers crossed for you over here for the next few days!

    PRICE GOUGING! The new threat.

On my way to work this morning, I noticed a gas station was open. I had a 1/4 tank, but figured I may as well top off. So, I whip in, pay for $20 worth, and start pumping my gas. I was almost done and looked to see how much I had pumped. That's when I noticed the price. $2.41 a gallon! Here locally, the average is $2.09 or less. I finish the last buck or so and go back inside.

I confront the clerk about the price and tell him how it's against the law to hike prices during an emergency. He starts rambling about his boos and refineries and other ********. I asked for the name of the manager and he claimed he didn't know it. I told clerk it would be easy to find out and I that was going to file a complaint. That's when the "Slim Jims" went flying across the store. I HATE "Slim Jims".

So, if you're in Texas and think a person or business is gouging, go here to file a complaint. Gouging IS against the law.

Rockport, TX was my favorite place on earth. I feel for you but don't know what more to say other than nature had its wrath and I am so, so sorry that you were in its path. I hope that you can sort things out. Keeping all of you in thoughts and prayers.

You're upset about $2.41 a gallon? Do you watch the news? They had to shut down dozens of offshore oil rigs which is the reason why the price increased there. It's $2.59 a gallon here. You need to go back there and apologize to the clerk and pick up all the Slim Jims. How old are you-16? Grow up!!!

Did YOU see what I wrote the general price is for the Houston area? No other stations have raised prices. This ain't Kentucky! Pay attention. Bite into a Slim Jim.

Price of gas here went up 40 cents just because of the eclipse and Labor Day. Supply and demand... if nobody else had gas your lucky it wasn't $5 a gal like it was 10 years ago.

That's because most of the other stations are closed due to the flood or have sold all their gas and can't get resupplied. You are extremely lucky to have found any gas at all! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go fill up the tank on my truck and I'm suddenly in the mood for a Slim Jim so I'm going to grab a couple of them too... :)

In defense of fred... Texas Attorney General office said...
“Unfortunately, price gouging like this can be common following natural disasters,” she concluded. Lovvorn added that they office has seen complaints from “hotels, grocers, fuel providers and (most frequently) fresh water.”

Businesses found guilty of price gouging can face fines of $20,000, according to Gritpost. They also note that “anyone who overcharges a senior citizen on necessary goods will be fined $250,000.”

I don't want to ruffle any feathers here BUT I agree with Fred, raising the per gallon price is just wrong , doesn't matter what the situation is, people are suffering extreme hardship and the station owner should NOT profit from that hardship. Talk about a scam. Hope all of you in the heart of this mess come out with your loved ones intact, material things don't matter as much as family and friends. Take care ,,,,,, Mitch.

The gas there is 18 cents a gallon cheaper than it is here and he's throwing a tantrum like an 8 year old? The clerk doesn't set the prices so he/she should NOT have to listen to insults and then have to pick up dozens of Slim Jims off the floor because immature little Freddy has to pay a little extra for gas. All the news networks said the prices were going to go up because of the flooding so he should deal with it like an adult and not like a child.... :(

I'm not one to rant but...Lebowski, have you ever been out of yer holler?

You can't compare the cost of a gallon of gas in KY to a gallon of gas in Houston (or Hawaii). Historically, gas in Houston is about the cheapest of anywhere in the country and a bump of 32 cents a gallon on $2.09 is significant (about 15% for those that are math impaired). That is a bunch. I might not have tossed the slim jims but I damn sure would never set foot in that gas station again.

Lebowski, why don't you come visit me and buy me a tank of gas in Chicago at an average of $3.46 a gallon.

tfeverfred - I always love your posts and if I can make it to Houston this week I'm gonna fill your tank and buy you a beer.

HRP, the prices will go up, but it doesn't happen over night and not a 30 cent jump. There is a process and it usually takes a while. I'd question that bump in your area. I consider CNN a creditable source of info. Here in Houston, it doesn't take CNN to let us know we're being screwed at the pump.

And Lewboski, I not sure why you feel the need to interject name calling in your posts. Perhaps it is YOU, who are being the child?

Hell, they're up almost 25 cents in Minnesota, and we get most of ours from Canada.

  23. Our gas jumped 16 cents a gallon overnight, I expect it too go higher. But that is a small problem
Our friends in Texas have real problems

Our town got it's *** beat, but we'll rebuild. It'll never look quite the same, but it'll always be the "Charm of the Texas Coast". Still not much word out of Port Aransas- the media wasted no time in moving to the next big thing. Hope their town isn't too horrible.

Yep, donate direct to a family. Pick one. Cut out the middleman. The "official" gubbmint charities won't allow used clothes to be donated. Or food that isn't prepared in a clean-room. Drive down with 1500 sandwiches to give out? So sorry! They'll have to be destroyed. They don't like the compe***ion is what it is. So who's gouging?

Price gouging is a funny thing. We all know what it is, and it's disgusting, but where do we draw the line? I know a hotel room in Phoenix in say, July, is pretty cheap. In January it costs way more. Supply and demand right? Is that gouging? Should it be illegal? Is anyone en***led to make a profit? If yes, how much? Who gets to decide how much is "too much"? See where I'm goin' with that? Price controls always lead to shortages. When gas went to 6 bucks everybody *****ed to high heaven, but you could still get it. In Venezuela the **** tator down there decreed that a dozen eggs can cost no more than .20c, he's a real man of the people. Eggs disappeared off the shelf within a day or two and haven't been back since. And they won't be, till a free market returns.

I could buy up a few dozen portable generators around here and drive down to Texas and sell them. There is a need for generators down there, and will be for a long time. Probably make a little profit, enough to make it worth my time? How else are they going to get there? Somebody has to, whether it's a big corp. See where I'm going with that? Incentive is what makes things work. Where does greed take over, I dunno.

I do know that a lot of people who don't know **** about business gravitate towards gubbmint, and legislation. Maybe they mean well. Maybe not.

Gas prices at the retail level don't work the way people think. They'd go out of business in a week if they ran it that way. They have to raise the price to their replacement cost + when it goes up and when prices go down they aren't going to sell the stuff already in the tanks at a loss so prices are "sticky" on the way down. Plenty of people to get pissed off at these days, gas station owners ain't one of them.

  27. I live in a bad place for flooding, it's been part of my life since we had a big one 43 years ago. I was 8. It's so bad, both towns on each side of the river are protected by floodwalls, built around 1980, and have been raised several feet higher since then.
It's stressful, some do ok, some lose a lot, loss of life is minimal. Those who are strong and patient, need to be understanding of others who who don't deal with it the same as them.
Loss of material **** is high, and some possessions can never be replaced. Mostly, I've learned in my little town, in these times, we all pull together. That's why I don't live in a city. To impersonal for me.
I like, when me and the ***** down the street, who normally wants to beat my ***, and vice versa, have to pull together, for the good of the whole.
Common sense keeps you safe in these times.

Sorry to hear that, choptop40. We went back over that way today just before dark. The rains have stopped for now and Cypress Creek is going down a bit, but the intersection at Stuebner Airline and Cypresswood is still imp***able, so we couldn't reach the other side of Cypress Creek and came back home. Best wishes and hope your place isn't badly flooded there.

    G-d bless,

Today's update...... Well, we have had around 40" of rain in our area over the past 5 days thus far. G-d has blessed us and we have no water in our home through this unprecedented storm. We had a few spells where we lost electric for short periods here, but for the most part we have had power and running water. Very unusual for us during a hurricane and we are most grateful for that, I can ***ure you. Many were less fortunate.

The storm made landfall 200 miles South of here and after going inland, swung North and the center went up around San Antonio 200 miles to our West. So we didn't have the hurricane force winds here in the Houston area. For us it has been a rain and flooding event for the most part.

After reaching the San Antonio area, the storm doubled back on its track and has now gone back out into the Gulf of Mexico and is moving to the East, away from us. Rains here at our home have stopped this afternoon and the sun is shining now for the first time in many days.

Flooding issues will continue for some while as the rain that fell upstream of us flows downstream through the already flooded areas and out to the Gulf of Mexico, ultimately. All rivers, bayous and creeks in the greater Houston area are out of their banks in major flood stage at present and it will be many days before these waters subside. Water rescues of people who are stranded in flooded areas continue here.

Curfew has been declared until further notice from 10:00 PM through 5:00 AM, effective this evening. Local law enforcement along with outside agencies that have come to help are now shifting their emphasis from rescue operations to making sure any robbers and looters are dealt with in the event private citizens do not deal with them first.

As an aside, I slipped and fell in the kitchen around 5:30 AM today. Drain for our freezer plugged up and put water on the floor when it automatically defrosted. I went in there for a drink of water without turning the light on before turning in and my cane slipped on the water and I went down hard on my right hip and elbow. Right shoulder is a bit sore as well, but it looks like nothing is broken so no harm done. Just wanted to remind all you older guys like myself who get around with the aid of a cane to be especially careful on wet or damp surfaces.

    Best regards to all,

    Harry

    Regarding donations....
If a Hamber in the area has a recommendation for a charity that they can vouch for, let us know.
