That's my old Villager. I knew it would turn up eventually. Went to Sweden a couple of years ago.

Well, like a teenage girl changing clothes before a big date I've changed my mind again! I decide to sell it then I buy a bunch of parts to fix it. I'll be sending the 390 block down to the machine shop soon. I have my new, used vintage Offy intake for it and have been researching cams for the rebuild.

Wish me luck. Any hints, tips, or suggestions for pulling the engine? I am thinking about pulling the whole front clip off... That seems like a daunting task that's just asking for paint damage. I also have been thinking about fabbing up some type of swing-set puller to yank that thing straight up and the roll the car out from under it.

I know kuumayktii has done the pull.... Who else? What works? What doesn't?

  10. I yanked the 361 outta my Roundup wagon.

I did it with a modified P.O.S. Horrible Freight hoist.

I extended the boom arm on the H.F. piece another 10" to clear the front of the cars "horse collar".Worked like a charm.

A BlueBird will not have the extra length to clear the grill.

That is a whole lot of engine to get up and over.

Oldmics that engine is almost as ugly and greasy as mine! That's is a whole lot of weight to get up and out. I'm planning on pulling as much off as I can before it comes out. Hopefully I'll just be pulling a short block. No heads, intake, manifolds, trans, etc.... time will tell.

Anyone else? That is helpful so far....

I first took whole front end off.. bit by bit. I had to do it, I wanted to rebuIld & repaint everything under hood.
Most painful was 2 fender bolts behind kick panels. Paint will suffer when you took fender off (or install those). Maybe even those 2 clips what are holding bolts under kick panels, start to turn freely, you can`t take bolt of from ther without violence.. Well, when bolts starts to turn freely, you can pull front fenders foreward... clips will sepertate from fenders without damage. SO, now Elli is working nicely, and front fenders are there tooo... quess what, while tightening driver side kick panel nut, it started to turn freely there... time to took fender off, and weld that clip to its place.. There are some clearing issues on Driver side door and front fender now..

Pulling engine is not so difficult, playing with front fenders are!

  15. I had to use my cherry picker just to remove the intake! ;)

  16. The captured nuts in the fenders are a P.I.T.A!!!! Rust in the bolt threads takes over and becomes stronger than the tiny welds/crimps holding them into the fenders. Take your time getting these suckers off. Patience is the key.....

Drew I have a heavy duty cherrypicker you can use that has plenty of lift and strength, just come and get it.

I want to try and leave the clip on, but that's a lotta weight to swing over the fender. No matter what I am guessing I'll have to pull at least the hood.

Time to start working out.... I may need some muscles for that iron SOB.

  19. Pulling the hoods DEFINATLY a two man job and is a must for engine removal access.

That being said as long as your cherry picker has enough boom length to extend to the center of the engine WITHOUT bumping into the horse collar and of course the heigth,I would not worry about the paint.

I had to remove the engine from my Roundup once it was painted and had no issues at all.Just cover everything thing up-twice!

I would yank it all out at once rather than dissassembling the intake, heads, etc.
    Your mileage may vary however.
