Thanks for the history safarinut and deuce roadster. If you'll notice, the track-nosed deuce has a for sale sign in the windshield in the pic. Wonder what he was asking for it?

By the way, the cat pic is really disturbing...did you miss the daily hit from your crack pipe this morning? [IMG] [IMG] I really can't figure out how that pertains to anythng else on this thread.

Bob, I looked and couldn't find a pic of the '34 5-Window. Why doesn't that guy just give it to me? I'd make sure it went to a good home.

Buzzard, I think the flames on the '40 came out great. I still have to pinstripe them, and I'll post pics after I get that done.

Nailheadmerc...as a matter of fact, I do have some pics of Norm from Tulsa '73. I'm holding them hostage until Bob gives me a Muncie though. [IMG]

That #5 '32 roadster is still running around in the Dallas area. The guy in the shades behind it I believe is the owner. I talked to him in OKC at the mini-nats this year. Still wears the orange paint with grayed magnesium 5-spokes.

  6. I'll have to go with Ray's story on the track nose roadster and I think it's still here in Mass. In pic #5 you'll notice it has a Mass plate.

However, I have to disagree with you on the Merc Ray, unless these Tulsa shots are from '76. Fred had the Merc in Tulsa in '76 not'73. Also his Merc is a bright yellow and in the pic the Merc looks gold. But he did have the white air cleaner with the murals (you do those?) and the LaSalle buttons.

'76 was the year they had the NSRA Street Machine Nationals the weekend before the Stree Rod Nationals. (How many remember that the NSRA had a Street Machine Division) Fred stopped in Tulsa on his way back from California. He got into Tulsa the day before his reservations started so Sue and I got to share our room with him, Pat and Cheryl. What a laugh!!

You are right on him getting his interior done in Tijuana like he had his other rods he built while he lived in California. The difference with the Merc was that he got the headliner done in New England, drove the car to CA, removed all the seats and panels and took them to Tijuana for a one day R & P job for cheap money. Why not just drive the car down there? Seems there were cars going to Tijuana for interiors and when they came back they had a chance of being stolen or confiscated depending on whether the cops or the robbers were after the drugs the interior had hidden by the dudes in Tijuana. Fred spent the day in Tijuana stopping by the shop without notice just to keep the dudes honest.

    #12) How about a trad dirt tracker & Kelsey equipped Track-nosed T? :

Whatever happened to this track nosed T? I believe this car was built by Dick Patton of Springfield, Ohio. It was around for a couple of years and then disappeared. Does the owner still have it and is the owner still around? Or, did he sell it?

Hey Bass, Thanks for posting the pics! They bring back great memories.

Thanks for filling in the missing pieces Dennis though I still think it's Fred's car. There can't be that many yellow Mercs out there with push button doors!
No I didn't do the mural on the firewall and I'm not sure who did but it was great work!
I dug up a Christmas card Fred sent me in 96 and although the digital repo isn't the greatest it still shows the Merc pretty well.In case I don't talk with you before then have a happy holiday.

Dick Patton did build that Track T. Barry Lobeck cited Patton and this car as major influences on him and the Ohio look. Patton added flames to it shortly after these pictures were taken at Tulsa in 1973. I owned it in that configuration for almost 10 years in the 80’s before selling it locally. That person redid it in yellow. The last I heard, about 10 years ago, it had been sold to someone in South Carolina. I also would like to see it as it is now. Thanks for this picture.

  13. I'd give my left one for that Bantam.

  14. Here's an amazing 70s "restorod" survivor 3w that popped up in a garage in Rockford IL this year. It started out as a hemi-powered 50s coupe, then in 1970 local guy Jim Chamberlain built it as seen here, with a full Corvette drivetrain (327-365 hp). I believe it debuted at the first NSRA meet in Peoria that year. It went into hibernation in '91 or so. Amazing detail, even has the original armrests and cigar lighter.

The car is now owned by HAMBer nummnuts...

My favorite car of all time... my Uncle Nick's 32 former coupe. Its not the coolest car out there... some things might make you scratch your head... but its a true hot rod. He did everything on it... paint, body, upholstery, engine, exhaust, suspension... everything in his garage.

He finished it in 73 (complete with 72 Pinto front clip) and for its first voyage went from Chicago to Tulsa, Ok without incident.

(if you can call driving a few hundred miles with a shoelace throttle cable non-incidental...)

Its the first hot rod I ever rode in. The first car I ever wished was mine. I still lust after it today. I wish I had some earlier pictures of it... although it has remained virtually unchanged since it first left the garage in 1973. Its a shame... it is a well built and unique hot rod... and it gets overlooked by cookie cutter street rods and checkbook kit cars.

He was really excited when his car appeared in the background of a picture of the Good Guys Gazette. He deserves more than that... the car deserves more as well.

Great pics. That '33 Willys looks a bit like the one I crewed on in the late 60's. Got sold while I was on a tour of southeast Asia. I heard it turned into a street rod. I wonder?.... Mike (photo by Bob Plumer)

The 70's blew in SO MANY WAYS. But, some of my favorite cars were from this time. I spent most of my childhood in the 70's and had a great time in spite of disco and and bad clothes.

    Great pics BASS.

#16 my old Roadster, still have the old girl, was working on her today.
Neat to see it in 70's trim.

  24. nice!

  25. Really - you picked those?

I hated my grandmother forcing Tab Cola down our throats and telling us it was good for us!

Pepsi will rot your teeth... and watching Three's Company will damn your soul for eternity.

How did I make it this far?

Great to look back at the 70's, wish I had my 57 Nomad that I let slip away in the trama of a big "D" (and I don't mean Dallas). Thanks for sharing, that bantam would be a handful for sure. Some nice trad rods for that geeky time however, good taste always comes thru. Gracious-Sololobo!

I thought this one looked very familiar...

Then I looked at my pictures from Goodguys last year...
    Gotta be the same car.

*edit* On second thought, perhaps not. But close, maybe an updated version.

Bitchin' pics!!!....Now that's what I remember when I was younger....

  29. Holy back from the past!!!

Excellent thread Bass, and thanks for dragging it out of the grave Zenor.

I'm a bit too young to remember cars in the 70's (I'm 31), but I do have some pics of a few shows in the D.C. area I attended in the early 80's. I got bit by the car bug about the same time my oldest brother did...82, 83. I was 7 or 8 at the time. I had a little camera that used 126 film, square prints. I've got some around here someplace....

It is nice to see tasteful cars from these periods, so much of what I can remember is the horrid cliche' period rods.

This was my first car - a resto rod - built 75-77. Boss 302, toploader, 9 inch. Put a few SBC's on the trailer. The kid in the rumble seat now has a kid and a hot rod of his own.
