I am finishing up a 64 falcon for a customer... I detailed the engine and put it back in the car... fired it up and a car that sounded like a sewing machine before now sounds like something is hitting the pan... Is there anything that would sound like this that could be an easy fix? it doesn't sound like a knock..

I pulled the pan and it seems to go away.. any ideas?

Try a search on fordsix.com. I know I have heard this deal before, but I can't remember the exact set of cir***stances. It had something to do with the wrong fuel pump or hold down bolts... Wish I could remember, but I had to have seen it there.

Is there a big bent in the pan? Is the flywheel cover bent? Are the converter nuts all tight? Where ever a bolt goes in to the engine, are any to long and hitting something inside?

I'm sure you checked this but I had the same issue with my 170 when I put it back in my Falcon. The bottom of the pan was pushed up slighty from setting on the garage floor. Good luck.

I know my description before sounded kind of lame, and I have played with these small sixes on and off for about thirty years, but this was one I had never heard of. Several regulars on that board knew exactly what it was right away and the problem was solved quickly. I have been wracking my brain all day trying to remember what the out come was, but it came down to a bolt that was too long in the wrong place - externally. Go to the small six forum and go back a few pages and you will see what I mean.
