Just bought a 272 and it has a rear sump is there a way to switch it to the front without hurting anything. Putting it in to a 1956 fairlane
Not checked out on Y block Fords. But Y block Lincoln truck engines have the rear sump. To use the p***enger car (front sump) pan you must also use the oil pickup that goes with that pan.
Any Y-block pan with oil pick up tube (239,256,272,292 or 312) 54-62 Ford or Mercury will work except, T-Bird, pick up, or big truck.
Post this over in the 52-59 Ford Social Group, someone might have the parts you need,if the donor y-block came from a truck there is a little more you will need to know.
Reversing a Y block pan should be pretty simple, but the bolt holes are the issue, along with the pickup tube entrance. If you rotate the pan 180 degrees, the pickup tube entrance is now on the p***enger side. You will need to block that opening and cut a new one on the driver side where the sump is. If the bolt holes do not line up you can either drill new holes, or make an adapter plate that bolts to block and has tapped holes for the pan.
All the p***enger cars except the 'Bird came with a front sump pan... just find one of those along with the correct oil pickup tube and you're good to go.
Most people are looking for rear sump pans to put the engine in an early car. The OPs pan is probably something somebody wants.
Tri-Five Chevy's are rear sump, could you imagine the looks you would get with a y-block under the hood?
