why not use the duraspark distributor and mount a hei modual to a heat sink and hide it or gut a duraspark box and mount it in that to make it look stock frod

end play isn't a problem, is it? the cam gear drives the distributor gear and forces it down towards the boss in the block that it rides on, so it can't move around while it's running. I've only used maybe 3 rebuilt ford point disributors from the parts stores, they all worked fine.

Picture before I pulled it. Picture of what I believe is the problem.. Plastic spacers.. I've since learned of metal ones. Parts store guys aren't much help.. These are branded edelbrock.. Also a picture of where it is now.. On the lift building put new components and doing an aod swap.

Makes sense.. I read this in an article in Ford Muscle magazine. They were comparing some duraspark distributors. End play was one of the things they mentioned as a negative and referenced Davis Ignitions Duraspark distributor to be more solid and precise in their milling and ***embly. This is all new for me here.. I bought a couple of points distributors for my father in laws 61 f100.. first one was no good made mechanical grinding noise.. second one wouldn't run right.. replaced the points with a pertronix unit and all has been well for several years now. These were Cardone.

Ignore that spring on the carb for the kick down I had started to take it all apart and thought I should take a pic for reference sake if for some reason it needed to go back together.. and also took it to sell the carb when my new one came in..

  9. The magnetic uses magnets for a trigger as opposed to using an infrared beam. It is really noisy in electrical terms. Not good for unshielded electronics, like stereos and the like.

you can buy pretty much anything that Malory makes with or without vac advance. Something to watch for on the late points ignition is that they don't hold a set real well unless you scuff the points where they contact the point plate. I guess they started using better chrome or something. LOL

Yeah.. I was young and naive. I used to have one of those edelbrock mesh air cleaners ( for all of about 20 miles driven).. well I had the hood off and was going from the transmission shop to home after rebuilding the c6 and doing the upgrades on it.. well it started to rain and I had about 7 or 8 miles to go in a down pour.. I went to the parts store and got the first thing that would fit and didn't break the bank. and from then on .. thats just what I had. Baby number 1 came.. and now number 2 is on the way.. and 10 years have p***ed.. truck is a lot nicer than I originally thought it would be.. and now im making the driveline as nice as I can make it before number 2 pops out.. baby.. not the other number 2. o_O Im thinking about going with a Cal Custom style or similar air cleaner this go around. The edelbrock one is the only one I've seen in a Cast finish.. which I like.. and the valve covers are a cast aluminum finish as is the water pump and intake... don't want to over do that though. fine with shiny.. as long as it isn't chrome. lol. s-l1600.jpg s-l500.jpg

  11. The end play has never been an issue for me. As far as the Duraspark distributor curve, you can swap earlier advance parts into the Duraspark units as other than the reluctor/ignition plate all parts are the same IIRC. As far as the 'box', yeah, the OEM boxes have been known to fail and damaged plugs can be an issue. That's why I like the MSD boxes. Plus you have a few more options with the aftermarket boxes (want a rev limiter or a different limit? Want to run a big coil?) and they can be easier to wire. Nice thing about the Duraspark, you can get caps/rotors pretty much anywhere, not like the aftermarket dizzys (except for the ugly HEI units).

While im not super up on the idea of having a ignition box sitting in my engine bay.. I had thought about having a Street fire IGN box and either a stock earlier ford or a later duraspark be controlled by it.. These Street Fires seem to have a decent rep for street use.. I know the 6 series boxes are more popular.. I've heard guys talk about the Hyfire from mallory and Summits house brand CDI box. Summit racing has recommended that I buy one of their ready to run distributors and just change the gear... its about 200 bucks. Its tempting.. I just would hate to have a issue with the distributor and not be able to get it exchanged due to the gear being changed. as that seems to be a deal breaker for a warranty. would be my luck I'd get a brick.

in this time, you could have gone to the parts store, bought a rebuilt point distributor, installed it, and been driving around.

lol. the motor is out of the truck.. not going anywhere for a few more weeks. I appreciate the advise though. forgive my habit to research. I'm a technology engineer by trade... researching tech is what I do for fun. and talking to people in the know is how you learn. I'm learnin
