Technical Ford 351 W vs. 351 C engines

  1. I swapped a 351W into a '68 Mustang and it ran very well in a stock form. For the truck, I'd go with the 351C.

    A 300 hp 4 barrel Cleveland was 11 to one. I had a 76 Ranchero with a 400 and is would rattle with less than 9 to one

    If your out to make power with a Windsor, you can get valley girdles. Sadly they're pricey. Like much, much more then one for the mains.

    over here in australia the gt falcons had both ...first the windsor in 70 then the cleveland in 71...it is no coincidence
    that the gt with the 351 cleveland was the fastest 4 door production car ever...and 40 odd years later they are still comparing modern cars to them ....the windsor was and is a great motor but the clevo went onto greater levels..

    Since you already have the W with the roller cam, that is the route I'd go. It's already set up for today's sorry gas and oil so it should last longer in theory. Like already said, aftermarket support for the W is huge, so no problem finding parts. Another plus, if it matters to you, is the W was first used in the early 60's, although it was a small 260, it's still the same engine family, and most people can't tell the difference anyway. The C screams 1970's with it's wide valve covers. The street version of the C was more or less a de-tuned race motor, designed for the high RPM Trans Am and Nascar tracks. The W family was used in everything from Falcons to F350 trucks, so the durability is built in.

    Ford has a kit they put out that u can use to up grade ur Windsor to a Cleveland which helps with the oil problems the Cleveland has so u get the best of both world, plus u boost HP for a bang for ur buck to, I used one on my 289 and really worked well, if I build another 351W I'll go back to the Cleveland upgrade to help out on HP plus thos heads on a 351W throws car guys for a loop trying to figure out what u have lol good luck, harry

    I've had 2 Ws and a larger number of Cs, both 2 & 4V models, plus 2 302Cs. Didn't/haven't had any problems with any of the cs. they are #2 on my list of fav engines right behind the early Hemis.

    C heads on a 302W do. c heads on a 351W is a Clevor.
