Need help / guidance / suggestions - I have a '50 Anglia with a 360hp 351W with a FMX ******. My problem is I have a Powermaster starter that chewed its clutch recently, no idea why! Replaced the clutch and thought all would be OK, I wish! The starter now sounds like a bag of nails and blows the fuse. I'm now looking to swop out the Powermaster which is where you guys come in - whose starter are you using or what would you recommend, reluctant to go Powermaster again seen comments that they are weak in some areas. Your ***istance would be very much appreciated. Winter is over I need to get my fix of V8 rumble and get cruising

Ford PMGR aka Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction Starter. These were used stock starting in the early 90s. There are different versions for manual trans and automatics, the difference is the protrusion of the pinion gear. I don't remember which is which now though.

I converted a buddy's 69 Mustang 351W from a FMX to a toploader 4sp years ago. Used the original starter. Worked for awhile until it wouldn't crank. Pulled the starter and the flywheel had cut half of the starter end plate off. Car had open headers on it so you couldn't hear anything. Put the right starter on it and worked for 30yrs till he finally sold the car.
