A fellow Hamber was nice enough to dis***emble and ship me the guts of a 3 speed so I could put them in my case. I'm using Vern Tardel's booklet on rebuilding a 3 speed and managed to get the thing together. However, I have a single 'snap ring' of sorts that Tardel's book doesn't seem to reference and it was not obvious where it goes. Can anyone identify this ring and point me to where it belongs? Thanks
51A-7109S Spring and Inserts set (2&3 each) - for 51A-7105 hub This came from Van Pelts site . Check out the bottom of the diagram .Hopefully the left over ring is from another ge****t you have out of a later trans ?
Thanks Dad's 1932 that is definitely the ring but I only have one and there is not one installed on either side. I can slip it on either side but then the synchro doesn't slide over it. So I am hoping you are right and it doesn't belong. Should have checked Van Pelts site.
It belongs with the 8M-7124 type synchro ***y, which uses two of those rings. If you have the 01-7124 type synchro, you can use the 01A inserts, springs, and balls (in which case you would NOT use those round wire spings).....or you use the 8M type inserts and the two wire springs. I don't know what parts you have inside tht synchro, but if you have all the 01A goodies inside, that wire spring is superfluous (not needed). Our book covers ALL the synchros used from 1932 to 52.
Thanks Mac, You answered two questions for me, I do have the later version synchro and need 2 of those springs. And I do need to buy your book. Is there some special notch in the 7106 piece that allows the end of the spring to slide through? When I put the spring in place between 7107 and 7106 then 7106 no longer slides past the spring onto 7107.
The spring goes inside the synchro hub, not on the outside. Do yourself a favor and order macs book before you try to put it all back together. There are lots of tips and info that are very helpful. For instance: The 7105 and 7106 were fit together by hand at the factory. Keep rotating one tooth as you put it together and you'll find there is one spot that slides really well. Sometimes you'll see an alignment dot on each piece but not always. Finding the right spot really makes for a smooth shifting trans. I've read macs book more times than I care to recall and I still had to ask him for help on a few parts.
