Absolutely George. The AOD can be built and tuned right in to whatever combination of car and motor it is connected to. That is why I love using them in my builds. Not as cheap and easy as grabbing a C6 out of the wrecking yard and throwing it in, but much better results in the end.

Edelbrock carbs are AFB's, so yes. I'll mention something else, on any combo between about 450-550hp the Blue Thunder medium riser 2x4 will perform REAL well, and it looks good too. The Edelbrock 2x4 airgap works good too, it finished just behind the Blue Thunder 2x4 on the 500hp 390 stroker in Jays dyno testing ( although it was well down from the blue thunder on the bigger hp motors) but most FE guys, me included, just cant accept AFB's on an FE, it just looks too wrong. Once you pass the 550-575hp range, the Tunnel Wedge starts to pull away from the Blue Thunder 2x4.

When my FE goes back together, a C-4 will go behind it. At 56, this is my last kick at the drag racing can, time to get serious.

I wonder if a AOD could be put behind a Y block using a FOM bellhousing.

My train of thought is this:

If I'm spending $3,200+ on GV, plus the cost of rebuilding the C6 (which will cost $$ for the rebuild cause I'm not going to take that chance of not going through it), that's a minimum of $4k+ that would supply pretty much whatever other trans I could go for this side of a T56 Magnum. Noting, a GV/C6 would only give my 6 speeds which a T56 already has anyway!

C6 with a 3.00 rear or less is completely impractical for towing anything, so I won't do that. And no, it's not a "hot rod" per say, but I'd like better than a 16 second car, lol.

At the cost of the GV, again, I think I'd rather go OD automatic with a 700R4 or other. Not to sure I'd go with the AOD because I had a lightly built/cammed/306 Lincoln MkVII that tore through a rebuilt AOD (D.O.A.) pretty quickly. OD slipped pretty good and it was NOT as fast as she sounded, lol. I'd prefer the 700R4 w/adapter over the AOD.

Anyone heard of doing up an E4OD behind an FE? Those have C6 roots right?

Maybe I will just have to go manual trans in my cruiser. Not opposed to it really, just be nice to have auto for when the arm goes around my ole lady. Saw a '58 wagon at Greaserama with a T5 behind it. Wish I would've gotten more info from him.

Probably, but I would be willing to bet it will require a custom built torque convertor.

I think I need to call Broader transmission on that.

Im not 100% but if I remember correctly the E4OD was just the later electronic version of the AOD like the 700r4 and 4l60e were for GM

  9. No, the E4OD was based off the C6, not the FMX-based AOD. The AOD as built by Ford isn't a performance trans, although it was improved during it's manufacture. The hot set-up is using the later EAOD or 4R70W gearsets in the AOD for better durability (the 4R70W sets also offer slight lower gear ratios) and their wider OD bands. Torque ratings of 500 ft-lbs or more are easily achievable with the right parts. Getting the TV cable adjusted perfectly is also critical to longevity, preferably by using a pressure gauge.

The AOD is the only Ford automatic OD trans that doesn't use electronic shifting, so retrofitting is easier.
