Changing the harmonic balancer on a 64 Galaxy and was wondering why the old one had that rod sticking out of it. What is it for and do I need to move it over to the new one?

I've removed several in the last few years from 64-63 Galaxies and never saw any such thing. Maybe somebody stuck the rod from the cam in their sometime while being it was being worked on years ago.

I would think not. It serves no purpose that I can think of. Does it stick out of the front side at all?) Possibly a dowel pin that was used to align a second pulley....?)

That rod is NOT original. Forget it.

  7. There is a chance that someone installed that when the engine was balanced. ***uming that it has been rebuilt.

Nope, shouldn't be there, I just ran down stairs and took a look at mine to double check and there's nothin' there. I don't even know why someone would put it there, unless they had an extra pulley on the front of the motor.

  9. I would think it has something to do with balancing. Has the balancer been lightened at 90*?

Perhaps someone's attempt to keep the damper from spinning on dry-rotted rubber?

I've seen dowels like that used for balancing (that's why dampers have all those holes), but it looks like it's slipped out most of the way?
