Hey guys, i just bought a 66 f100 and it has a ford 400 and an fmx trans in it. Im in the middle of adding my own little twist of things and in the midst im trying to figure out what options i have for transmissions. its an original automatic truck so there is no existing clutch pedal. Just trying to make it more of a cruiser, right now it has a 3.90 rear and runs a little high on the rpm's cruising down the road. Im wondering if there is a AOD option or anything i could do. Any help would be awesome. thanks

Most 400s have the 429/460 bell pattern, some made in '73 have the SBF pattern. So basicly your looking at a 429 C-6 being most common replacement tranny. While heavy the FMX uses less HP than the C-6. If you have the SBF pattern the AOD would be a bolt on, but the odds are against it. '71 Mustangs could be ordered with a 4 sp, but I imagine those are expensive, if found.

I imagine that you can easily replace the gears with a more easy on the gas bill ratio than 3.90s. Also there's @ least one lenthy Thread on here on the 351M/400.

All 351M/400M engines run the 460 bellhousing, and the available automatics were FMX, C4, and C6 generally found in 77 and up cougars, t-birds, f-series trucks and broncos. 73 would be a 351C which runs the 302 bellhousing, but the big heads.

thanks a lot for the reply's. i know the motor is out of a 77 f150, but not sure if the trans came with it. i've been reading some people say the e4od using a big block bolt patter but say the torque converter needs to be modified to fit. i'm thinking rear end swap my be my best bet.

First off we're talking the 400, not the 351M/C. The 400 came out in '71. 400s installed in full size '73s had the SBF pattern. Refs say the 400s made before March 2, '77 in the Michigan plant can suffer cracks above the lifters on the wall of the block. Casting code is MCC with a date code of 7C01 & earlier. Where it's a '77 you'll need the 429/460 pattern tranny. Also it's the 351M & 400, not 400M.

One thing Ford is famous for is inconsistency. Before buying any parts you'll do yourself a huge favor by verifying the bell housing pattern. Being a 400/FMX combo it could have either the small block or 429/460 bell housing pattern. If its the SBF pattern block you'll be able to bolt an AOD to it....paying attention to flexplate counterweight, balancing, etc, etc.

    If it's a '77 it has the 429 pattern.
