I understand the whole 28 oz vs 50 oz thing, but I wonder how it feels to have it out of balance? I have been chasing a shake on my coupe, and the other day I was thinking of the mix and match I did when I assembled the motor. If I had the wrong damper weight on it, will it shake at all engine RPM's? or will it only be noticed at certain RPM's? now for the getting a tad o/t part. It is an 88 Mustang engine, and I installed an Explorer (unknown year, prolly 96-01) front cover, pump and damper to gain clearance. Would there be an issue with the Explorer damper running on a Mustang 5.0 HO engine?
my friend bought a Cobra kit car with a 351 crate motor that shook what the guy put in was a 240 hp industrial motor it had mismatched parts check your part numbers to see just what you have he finally pulled the motor and put a 5.0 425 hp crate motor in, cured it for 7k oh well
There should be no problem damper wise as both are 50 oz,so that leaves the flexplate is that correct?
There should be no problem. Mustang guys use the explorer engine as an upgrade since they had the GT40P heads and the Cast Aluminum GT40 style intake and they usually have not been beat on.
My friend purchased a 302 stroker out of Florida and spent a few weekends trying to sort it out. I was called to meet him at the track for a test pass. When I launched the car it got to 2,800 and the dash shook so bad the gauges couldnt be read. Bring it back to our shop for evaluation and found the wrong weight had been put in the balancer. Thats was a easy fix but it still had vibes and removed the motor. The crank had also been chopped on so we wound up with a total rebuild and rebalancing the motor which was in the 200 g area out. The customer had run it way to long in this out of balance situation and it was not pretty inside. If you have any thing like this it needs to be checked in a good machine shop and one knowledgeable in the correct parts and proper balancing and assy.
Thanks guys, I figured my parts were a good fit, buy just wanted to be sure. I get a shake at speed that has been bugging the crap outta me, so I thought i'd add this question to my list of things I have checked.
The explorer balancer has been known to fail and twist. I have a new one if you're interested. Depending on how your engine mounts are, you can be transferring vibes. I fought that with mine for awhile.
just at a certain speed, but I've been thrrough the trans, driveshaft, wheels, up on stands, driveshaft angles, etc. I may need to try a different set of wheels and tires. I think it is just a harmonics thing.
If it is an imbalance problem with the engine it should do it when you just run the engine up and also at the same rpm range in each gear. Are you running an auto tranny. I've seen torque converters with internal problems that caused a noticable vibration at road speeds.
no trying to switch directions of the thread, I was mainly looking to see if it would shake all the time or at certain rpm's, and I think I got that answered. thanks
I think it's been said already, but it's not at all unusual for SBFs to spin the balancers. The rubber degrades and the inner and outter parts slide out of place. You notice it with timing light. When I have had shakes like you are talking about, I had the plug wires mixed up or a cylinder not firing.
Do you know if i buy a 96 explorer from the junkyard if the flex plate and dampner is the one id use or do i need to buy a different one... i want to put it in my 66 fairlane?
You would be much better off starting your own thread about your 1963 Fairlane than posting on a 9 year old thread. Good Luck
