I've got an 8" axle here from (I think) a mustangII, I want to positively ID it, but annoyingly the data tag has been snapped off. Its 57" face to face. In the diff casing I see 5M17 cast in small letters and 19 in larger letters just to the right of that. Up near the yoke the I see "DW20 D" stamped and 315 cast in to it a couple of inches away. Did a search but all I find is data tag info. thanks!
Yeah it is 4 stud. It appears to be a LSD / posi or whatever ford called them, hence wanting to ID it for sure.
Those casting #s won't tell ya anything about what is inside. That is why it has a tag. Gotta get in there if the tag is gone! Pull the drivers side axle and look at the splines. Most of the time, you can see a line dividing the wear mark on the end of the axle if it is a Traction Lock. Broken spiders, and some other things, can make it lock up and appear to be a Traction Lock.
