The latest problem getting my dual carb '50 Merc to run right is a stall situation. It starts up, runs a few seconds and dies. I have a new fuel system, tank to carbs. When I purchased the car, the carbs were full of crud so I cleaned them. Maybe there's still some dirt plugging a jet? By the way, I have new plugs, new condenser, cleaned the dual points (Mallory distributor) and set the points at .020. Your advice since I joined the H.A.M.B. is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Matt
An old trick was to run each carburetor on a single (stock) manifold to make sure it works and is roughly tuned. Once you know they both work, run them on the dual manifold.
In the event of power valve failure, they will start and flood the engine quickly. 2 questions, does it start, and can you keep it running by feathering the throttle or pumping the pedal? Or does it want to be kept open on the throttle? Have you pulled a plug and looked at it after it died? The answer to the question above will give us an idea of what is happening. Mostly likely you will have to take them all apart, check and clean again. Special attention in the Power valves, if need replacing, don't buy the speedway junk or try to put a regular holley in, they won't work. Van pelt has the correct power valves.
