Hey all, I am in the process of putting a 302 in my son's truck in place of the 2.3 four banger and I need some info....The first thing is passing gear, does anyone make a cable or linkage to use an AOD trans with a carbuerated engine???

Next question is, the engine is an 89 h.o 302 from my Mark VII LSC, will any year 289/302 after market intake fit this engine or did Ford change the bolt pattern/angle like GM did with the small blocks in the late 80's???

Last question is the electronic speedo on the AOD...Is there an aftermarket kit to adapt a cable drive to this trans???

Any help will be appreciated....I'm not to up on the newer stuff like AOD's, computers ect so I can use all the help I can get on this project...

    Thanks,
    Randi

  2. I'm pretty sure Lokar makes them. You need to be real careful and get it adjusted properly before you drive it, otherwise you'll burn up the tranny in as little as a few hundred feet. Some of the 5.0 tech websites detail the procedure, I've read about it there. The intakes were the same for all Windsor 289's and 302's. Good luck!

My coupe has had an AOD in it for several years now. I use a Lokar setup, which has worked well. I did end up making a bracket to support the transmission end of the cable housing, but it wasn't difficult. I think it could have been that I just wasn't clever enough to figure out the usual way to do it.....

sounds like you are doing a ranger v8. like the guys above said, lokar makes the TV cable and bracket for the carb/AOD combo.

all 289/302 intakes should fit no problem. dont forget to look for a different distributor. the FI dizzy has all those wires hangin off it. get one for a points engine, or an aftermarket electronic dizzy. a while ago, they were saying use only a bronze gear on the dizzy shaft, now they say its ok to use regular gears on them. dont worry about that.

the AOD that i am gonna use does not have an electric speedo, just a big plug for the reverse wiring and neutral start switch. look for the wiring diagrams out three on the mustang sites, they say what color wires do each function. check out the trans, it might have a cable installed on it

Thanks for the help on this little project..The truck is a ranger, this is my 17 yr olds truck, the main reason for the swap is we can't get the 2.3 running, something is wacked in the electrical for the computer, I've done everything I can think of and after spending $100 at a crack on elec parts and computers I've had enough, drop a 302 with a real carb and distributor and I can work on it, all that puter stuff has me totally baffled....

Remember when it used to be fun to work on your car???

    Thanks again,

Check out this month's STREET RODDER, there's an article in there concerning an AOD swap and it includes details about the shifter and TV cable (also called a 'kickdown cable' by some).

The AOD is a popular swap for Ford guys, and lots of aftermarket transmission specialists carry parts and accessories for modifying, rebuilding and swapping AODs into other vehicles.
