I have a302 out of an 83 Merc that I'm putting in my 65 F100. I threw all the computer stuff and put an offy intake with a Holley carb on it. Can I still use the AOD*******???
Doing the same in my Ranchero...compy-crap in the trash. You can use it, you just have to keep the t.v. cable functioning...it will have to work off of the carb, thats all.
I used one behind my 302. Lokar makes a cable. be sure to test the pressure and adjust the cable accordingly. I had to add another spring to the Lokar setup to get my pressure to where it needed to be. Sure like it better than the C4 behind my other 302. Joe
Either a cable, or if you can find an early 80s full-size Ford or Merc for parts, up to around 1983 model year they were still available with a carb'd 302, and used a metal linkage for the throttle valve on the AOD. As mentioned, adjustment on these is critical for trans. longevity. cheers Ed N.
My Model A has a 302 and AOD from a '90 Lincoln Mark VII... just buy the Lokar cable and everything is good...
I've got an aod in my 40 sedan with a 351w. Used the Lokar cable. Sure is nice to cruise at 70 mph/1800 rpm. The aod has an internal spring that tries to open the tv valve so if you use the Lokar cable you need an external spring to counteract the internal one. Set the tv pressure with a guage per the instructions and you should have no problems. Mine has about 20k mi so far.
Yep, Lokar has all of the correct trans stuff to use (got mine cheapest on ebay).Do you have AOD or AOD-E? Either way go to phoenixtrans.com for Phoenix Transmission Products out of Weatherford, Texas (not Phoenix, Arizona). They sell correction brackest to use with TV cables and all major brand carbs. This should help correct having to run extra spring as mentioned.
i have an aod from a 90 crown vic with a lokar shifter. i believe the only electronic part is the overdrive lock up torque. the******* was rebuilt by lentech and has a toggle switch for the torque lock up. i guess for towing to keep it out of overdrive. http://www.lentechautomatics.com/aodtech.html
TCI makes a constant pressure valve body for the AOD. You still need the rod or cable, but gnats**** adjustments are no longer critical with it.
I am running two street rods with AOD and 302/347 engines. Other than the critical adjustment its trouble free with 50 k+ on my truck and 9K on my 34. good for milage and like one of the other post don't use the OD tp pull trailers or heavy loads. If you want bulet proof have Linteck build you one.
mazdab 2600-thanks for link to Len Tech. Flathead Lobo-check to make sure rearend has low gears. I am using 3:73.
Well good news and bad news, first the good:your '83 AOD is non-computer so that's a plus. Now the bad:the early AOD's have a lot of weak points but I will recommend you do 3 things while you have it out, change the valve body to a 87-91 AOD,change the servo to a "A" or "B" and install a Trans-Go reprogramming kit,use that with the Lokar cable and it will last. One other thing if you are going floor shift you will need the AOD shift lever kit from B&M which is EZ to put in when you change valve bodies but a PITA to do if it's in the car. After reading the info on the TCI valve body from the above post If that is affordable,go that route in the long run you'll be $$ ahead.
I'm using and AOD w/351w. I had heard the worst weak link in the trans was the input shaft. I've seen several versions for sale. I bought the TCI valve body. I will do a 1st road test this weekend.
