I have a 1963-1972 Ford F100 9" rearend. The axles have 28 spline with large bearings. They seem to be the same lenght, is this right? The housing is offset to one side. I want to change to a 5 on 4.5 hole pattern to match the front. What year and model can I use?

  2. I would check with Curry (or a machine shop) to see if your axles and drums can be redrilled.

I would think there might be a station wagon big bearing axle you could use but they would be rare as hell. I would redrill them instead as has been suggested.

Thanks, I was trying to find one with 4.5 spacing so if I broke one, I would not have to go the redrill again.

There are many years of Ford/Merc models that used a 9" with 5 x 4.5 bolt circle. There are also 5 x 5" bolt circles too.........so be sure and measure whatever axle you happen on to. Good place ot look is '57 Ford car thru about '72, although they get wider as they get newer to some extent. Also mid to late 70's Torino/Cougar/T-Birds have a very heavy duty housing 9" with the really generous size taper bearing and stout axle shafts and they are 5 x 4.5" and should be fairly easy to find.

As for breaking one, unless you have a fairly heavy vehicle, with lots of power and you intend to abuse, you are not likely to break a truck 9" axle shaft.

    1965 - 1968 Ford and Mercury
    67 -68 Thunderbird

Have a 28 spline large beaaring axle shaft that is 29 and 3/4

You pickup has axle shafts that are 30 inches ( both of them ).

I have used the 1965/65/67/68 axles in a Ford pickup rear end ... with no issues.
    BUT like vintagehotrods said ...

It would be less expensive in the long run to just redrill your axles ...
