There cannot be a precise answer to your question until it is confirmed that indeed you do have a 36 axle wide 5 vs having a 37,38 or 39 version wide 5.

Question 1, Does it now have mechanical brakes controlled by a pull rod?, (1936) or cable controlled brakes (1937-38)?, or Hydraulic brakes(1939)?

Question 2. In the area where the backing plate bolts on, are the spindles rectangular spaced with 3/8 bolts? (1936) or round with 7/16 backing plate bolts spaced as square (1937-41).

If you respond to the questions that relate to the 1936 spindle questions the answer is, Yes, 1940 backing plates and hubs will bolt on but it will require that you use a centering spacer on the backing plate and re drill the plates to fit the spindle mounting holes. A bearing spacer is not required on the 36 spindles.

If you responded to the questions that relate to the 1937-41 spindles, the 1940 backing plates and hubs will bolt right on. If you responded that the donor front axle already had hydraulic backing plates (1939) Then all you have to do is change to 1940-48 the drum/hub for the smaller 5 1/2" bolt pattern.
