    Hi!
I’ve had issues with my Ford C4 in my 55 Customline. Turns out the oil pan is full of black sludge.

I’ve never really dealt with automatic trannys and need a good source for rebuild info (youtube, books, step-by-step tutorials etc)

I have some mechanical skills (built a 351C and 445 FE-stroker) so i believe and can get it done with good guidance. The budget for a pro rebuild does not exist.

Do you have any good, easy to follow and reliable sources in your sleeves?

Find a copy of Motors auto trans shop manual from around 70-75. I have one and it covers back to the late 50's transmissions. It has pretty good info and photos on rebuilding them. You can find them at the half price books stores usually or online. Of course a factory shop manual is always best if you know what year your trans is.

  4. ^^^ x 2 on that book. Rebuild of that transmission is not extremely difficult, but does require some specialized tools, some of which can be homemade.

You're fortunate in having a C4 to rebuild, it's dead simple and the only real requirement is some good sanp ring pliers and a CLEAN place to work on it. Only comes apart one way and goes back one way.

That’s probably a true statement but I can assure you that it can go together wrong many different ways! Clearances are vey important just like any other trans. Getting into the valve body probably a must if it has grindings in the pan. That can be tricky and needs to be especially clean.

The C4 can nowadays be built to high horsepower and performance levels, lots of stuff available. Light weight, and doesn't take much power to turn it. Youtube is your friend

Pay close attention to the thrust washer position and orientation. There are not that many in a C4 but you don't want to leave any out. Depending on the year model, there are a few different servo piston styles and sizes so make sure you determine the year of trans you have.

I always drop the new seals in the servo cover to size them up as the kit will come with multiple sizes. Also, small thrust washer on bottom of pump stator should not cover the lube hole.
