If a fella was going racing flatheads and bought more stuff than he could use, how much are crankshafts worth these days? Both Merc and Ford. We're going Nitro racing, but we still have more than we can break. Think of these as sort of like Girl Scout cookies, it helps us achieve our goals...

    So, what's a fair price?

    Thanks

I don't see Merc cranks going for as much as they used to a few years ago. Or maybe I stopped paying so much attention to the overpriced ones once I got everything I need?

With **** cranks available for 700 I think the very top end for a Merc crank in great shape would be 400-500. Ford cranks should be really easy to come by. I see a lot of them given away just to make room.

    $300

If you want to go fast and not worry about breaking the crank, get a 1 inch stroke billet.

Merc cranks used to go for 400 buck around here but now most Flathead guys are happy with a Ford bored .80 or .120 over for the street.

Thanks. We are guessing $400 or the 4" and $200 for the Fords. There should be some speed goodies as we sort this stuff out.

The $5 ones get dropped on your foot, Lippy...

A few years back at Bakersfield Hot Rod reunion, **** had a booth. There were the 'new' flathead cranks, many in stock. There was a larger group of cranks off to the side, I asked about them. The salesman said, "Oh, those are 'seconds'. Good deals there..."
He was busy, and I have wondered about that ever since. "Seconds???" I didn't see any tags, and didn't have a mic with me. Still wonder about a 'second'. If it was undersized, a better term could have been applied. I still shot-peen Merc cranks, then index them.
Aside from the "900 H.P. Flatheads" I read about on this site, (still laughing) Mercs are still servicable.

    Phil,
See if you can call Ed Houtz in Lancaster. He'll know. He's raced fuel flatheads for many years.

I just don't get these "What's it worth" threads. If I can't use it, I give it to a buddy that can and will. Thats as nice as I can put it.

The most I've ever paid for a Merc crank is $200. Ford cranks have all been free.

In the last year my brother paid $300 for one Merc crank (too much), then I found one for $150 (good deal). Currently there's one in the HAMB cl***ifieds for $250, and since it's still sitting there I'd say that is an indication it's not a "too cheap" price.

Ford cranks are almost free unless they have excellent journals to use the cheaper standard size bearings.

I've had a ready to go Merc crank with new 8BA rods in the want ads for $500 for quite a while and no takers. I think the pkg deal for **** stuff with the Ross pistons is having an effect on the market. I'm going to take the new French block I've had for sale and put in a **** 4 1/8 pkg with all new internals and should have a motor that'll last for my lifetime in my deuce roadster.
