I ordered a Ford data plate from Midwest Early Ford with a number stamped on it last week, it arrived today and I'm not real happy with it. The number stampings are fine, but the screen printing of the plate itself isn't very high quality.

Under the Ford logo is a line of type and as you can see the "S" in U.S. is only half visible. There are a couple of other places in the black that look like someone daubbed some ink on them to cover voids in the image area.

I called Midwest Early Ford and I was told that all the blank ones they had in stock had some lettering that is wholly or partly obscured. They also told me that they get them already screen printed from someone that's licensed by Ford, that I probably won't be able to find one that's better, and if I don't want it I can return it for a refund.

Does anyone on the board here know if what I have is the best obtainable, or if there's another source that sells a higher quality data plate?

Thanks for any input and Merry Christmas.

Is that serial number same as the "vin" number and is that the proper place for it?

The serial number is the early equivalent of a VIN.

I was hoping you'd have a good lead for me. I was a screen printer by trade and I have to believe that
someone is making a better one.

Wonder if it would look better if one could emboss some raised details in the metal plate ? Ford, and the black color border needs a dimensional rib detail of sorts....I think.

You are right though. I just****umed there were better options then just a flat sprayed piece. Kinda' loses its detailing to even want to mount it. Just doesn't look right.

If one had some thought and some forming time in, you could probably do a better job yourself...as a side piece.....for your own car.

Did this plate ever exist when Ford was building the cars? I've NEVER seen a plate with any numbers on it in 50+ years I've been in the hobby. Ask this question over on the Ford Barn, should get some interesting replies. Bob

AFAIK, Early Fords had the serial number (pre-VIN) stamped in three places on the Driver's side of the frame and on the engine and the transmission. There wasn't any S/N plate, that I know of.

Yup. There was only a patent plate on the firewall.

That did NOT have the serial number on it.

Also, if that tag is for a Model A, it is an incomplete serial number, and it had better be a 1930 Model A.

Another thing than makes it look really fake is the lack of Motor Company, Detroit Mich. Since it was never on the car when Ford built it were would you place this wart?

who would care? If it was a real one, it would be 85 years old and certainly have more imperfections than that.

why would you attach a tag like this that is obviously a fraud and has no respect for originality?

I thought about these plates, but I don't know. I have built a new frame and replaced the engine in my model T. It is currently****led with the original****le. There are no identifying numbers on the car that match the****le. What do you do? Scared to go to the BMV.

Simple fact is that it is a poorly made item that was never issued by Ford, revisionist history has to be pointed out when it pops up. Merry Christmas! Bob

^^^^^ Thank you for proving my point with photos, Ford NEVER issued the plate you started this thread with with the blank spot on top were the numbers were stamped by someone. Ford stamped the numbers on the frame. Bob

Unless you are putting this on a 1949-1951 F-1, then really.

You posted tag is not for a Model A, and applying it there is skirting the edge of the law.

That, and you left the leading letter A out of the serial number.

You should have scrolled down to the last picture. Think 'truck' Bob, and never say never.

    I never said it was.

Review words #13 and #14 of post #1.

You are putting an F-1 tag on a Model A.

If a state inspector, cop, or insurance adjuster, who knows his or her stuff spots it, you might not end up a happy camper.

if that cop/inspector/adjuster looked at the tag, he would never know it was a truck tag.

all he would say: "OMG, what a terrible product you bought! You really got ripped off! Can I help you get a refund?"

WTF difference does it make to you what I do with the tag? All I hear is "if, if, if".
Ford never made a car with '50 Pontiac taillights, but some people prefer them to the originals.
I asked a simple question and got you three all wrapped-around-the-axle over it.
Sorry if I invaded your perfect world.

Putting Pontiac tail lights on a Ford is not, nor would it ever be considered fraud.

In most states, stamping your own VIN/serial is a felony, and, if caught, it will NOT be up to you to decide if Johnny Law accepts your excuses.
