Hi there. I have been reading the forum threads on Jaolpy for years now and finally decided it was time to join the community. I have a 1958 Ford Fairlane with a speedomter that makes screaming noises and moves erratically when it gets above 35 mph or so. Works fine at low speeds. I changed the speedo gear/lubed the cable. I took the instrument cluster out of the car and bench tested it with a drill and it seems to work perfectly at all speeds. I also ran the car with the cable un hooked and where I can watch it and the cable core spun smooth and quiet at all speeds. But when I put speedo back in the car and hooked it up it started having the same problems immediately. Any ideas? Thanks
Speedometer head is 'dry'. I had a '57 & a '59 that did the same thing. A Very Small(tiny drops!!!) of sewing machine oil on all the bearings in the Speedometer head did the trick for me, but let's see what others will suggest....
might be the cable is too long, and putting pressure on the speedo head when you tighten it up. Or it could be the speedo is dry and needs lube. Or it could be plumb wore out.
Noise and pointer bounce above 35 mph is in the speedometer itself. Usually a worn or dry jewel in the magnet. You can try oiling the the end of the magnet shaft, if that doesn't work it will need to be repaired. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
