    howdy, I have a 390 or 428 Block in my '57 Ford.
I want to change the cruise o matic to a 4 speed. (Pedals are already in there!)

I have a Borg Warner T10 and two Muncies in my garage. Are there any bellhousings available to put one of these to my FE Block?

I heard that they used to have T10's in Fords as well. Not just them Toploaders.
I also would use toploader, but I don't have one...

Anyone tips or ideas on this one?

Or someone has sth. 4 sale for me?

    Thanks.

  2. Yes you would need to find a bellhousing fron a 1958 to 1964 332 352 390 the flywheel on a 428 is balanced different fron 390s OldWolf

If your going to beat on it. Spend the money for a large shaft toploader. The 428 has a lot of torque. standard 4V motor has 462 @2800 rpm. and the CJ has 440 @ 3400 rpm.

Most of the T10 were in the small block. I broke a lot of them with a 289.

bendtsens makes an adapter to put a GM manual behind them i think.

Harrison makes a Muncie adapter. I would definitely kill the T10 idea unless the FE is weak and driven very lightly all the time. It will not stand up to the torque. The above suggestion is correct, find the proper 'big in, big out' toploader and be good to go. David Kee could be a definite help with anything toploader. Another choice (room permitting) is the TKO boxes from Tremec. Either the TKO500 or 600 should work fine, but they are pricey. The ****tershields are readily available.

T-10's came behind 390 powered Galaxies for years, so strength is not an issue. The standard T-10 is not the slickest shifting ******, there are better options. The easiest way to put a GM ****** behind a Ford is to get a ****tershield and the small spacer ring that will allow the ****** bearing retainer to properly centered in the ****tershield's center hole.( Speedway sells them) Once the ****** is centered, all you have to do is use a transfer punch to mark the holes and drill and tap them. A clutch pilot bushing with the proper dimensions will be required, as will a clutch disc with the proper spline. A Muncie will be more than up to the task, but better still is the Super T-10, which has to be the slickest shifting ****** out there. I have a couple of Ford cars with GM ******s, and it is really very simple to do.

Okie Dokie! Thanks friends! That's a lot of information that I can use!

:) i will try my best. A Muncie should be strong enough I think.

no it won't. Alloy case muncies become stretched and turn into Munchies with a FE 's torque. Top loader or expensive tremec is the only way to go .see my PM for the type you should hunt for .
If you look back in time even the factory MOPAR ramcharger team used top loaders in the manual equiped cars. ...and the next best box is the new process 4 speed from Chrysler...

Me too, I wrung off 2 input shafts in my 427/425 powered 57 Ford back in the late 60's with an aluminum T-10 out of a factory lightweight 63 1/2 Galaxie on street tires. Wish I still had it to sell on Ebay

The TKO500 or 600 would be my choice behind and FE, but, as already stated they are Pricey.

If it's a strong 4-speed you are looking for, I would also go for the "big in/big out" Top Loader - 31 spline. They are also pricey, unless you find a deal, but they are TOUGH.

I'll throw this option out there also - how 'bout a T56 6-speed? These guys make a bellhousing to put one behind the FE for $395:

It says for the Ford T56, so I'm ***uming it's the Cobra T56 you'd look for. They can be found for around $1500 used and, from what I've read, are pretty tough. Fitment could be an issue, unless you don't mind cutting up your trans. tunnel.

Anyways, I know you are asking about 4-speeds, but I just wanted to throw another option out there for ya....

Adapting the transmission you have only saves you money until it breaks, then you are behind where you would have been had you gotten the right one the first time. If you are a slow learner, and break a couple of T-10s or Muncies, you are WAY behind.

I just took out the three on the tree and put in a T10 in my galaxie( 390 ) . It was a 64 FE Galaxie trans and it was the same size as the other three speed and it was really easy to swap out. Everything fit where it was supposed to. Do a search on what model you want because they had several different versions to fit different cars, It took me a while to find a galaxie trans due to the shifter being in different positions, oh and also, some have a small bellhousing pattern and some have a wide pattern, ( trans to bellhousing ) so make sure you have the right one so they fit together.

There is a reason why Ford went to the top loaders - the T-10's could not hack it. Ford used the big in-big out toploader behind every 428 built (that wasn't an automatic).

I'm wanting to do something similar in my 55 crown vic, but I'm wondering if the rear end will take the abuse? Big difference between a 312 and a 390.

I had a 66 Cyclone GT(first new car I ever bought) with the 390 and small input toploader 4 speed. Beat the hell out of that car and never had a ****** problem. Put a 429 CJ in it in 1970 and used the same trans. Never had a problem. The big input/output would be nice, but as noted is pricey.

...and every single NASCAR team until they went to Jerhico ******s (which are toploader derivatives)...

I would change the rear to a 9 inch with the 390. If it not a HO 390, then an 8 inch may do it. The stock 55's won't cut it IMHO

I'd go with the 9" too, don't think the 8" in a haevy car will hack the 390s torgue, plus better gear selection. If you can find a 9" out of a 57 Ford, might almost be a bolt in.The spring mounts on the 57 may have to be removed and rewelded,I used a 57 9" in a 64 Falcon, that was the only thing I had to do.Trying to remember, but I think the backing plate to backing plate was 54".
