Great info! I just got another 49-53 Flathead that was pulled from a ‘40 Ford to do a Y-Block swap. This Flathead appears to have been rebuilt recently, has Offy heads and dual carb intake. The only marking on the block that I can find are p***enger side , bellhousing area it has “H-284”. I can’t find any info as to what that indicates about what this came out of originally.
The car was running and driving when pulled, no leaks, no smoke, oil and coolant looked good as well.

Thanks in advance for any info on the block.

    Back from the dead; maybe???

Does anyone have the original pix that came with this thread? I'd love to copy this into an MSWORD file with included pix; preferably blown up to be more visible. This would be a really informative little "book."

Or did anyone actually do this when the thread was newer?

Thanks, Photobucket, for screwing up the picture world.

I'd ask @38 coupe but he hasn't been seen here since 2/20/23. Does anyone know him?

Then I was growing up all flat heads for sale were 48 Mercs… a few years later all SBC’s were Corvette’s, Ford Y-Blocks were 312’s, and Chrysler Hemis were 392’s

The original posts are old enough I am not allowed to edit them, so I think a new thread is the best idea. I am happy to do that, but it will probably be mid to late December before I have enough solid computer time at home to do a good job of it.

Until I have time to do a better job of things, here is a table I put together of the USA blocks that were made for domestic use. I think you get a larger version if you click on the image. You can also right click on the image and open it in a new tab for a larger image.

38 contacted me and directed me to the (more or less identical) Ford Barn post. Over there glennpm and 38 coupe compiled it into a 75-page pdf file and included a link, which my printer is spitting out as I'm typing this.

    EDIT:
This has finished printing and now I'll be putting it into a 3-ring binder for future reference. This binder will reside on the shelf directly above my computer (where I'm sitting now).

Thanks to @38 coupe here and on the Ford Barn; also to @glennpm on here and the Ford Barn.
