I have a '54 Meteor (Canadian Car) with a 239 flathead. Yes I know, in the US flathead production ended in '53, but here in Canada it went on for another year before being replaced with the Y block in '55. Anyway, I want to replace the valve seats. It seems that only the exhaust valves have seats where the intake seats are ground right into the block. Does anyone know anything about this?

    Yep....
Exhaust have hardened seats, Intakes are into the block.
Unless there is damage and you cannot surface for the valves, there is no reason to install inserts.
