Hi there, I trying to build my 32 frame with a flaty and a ford toploader tranny, the question is about ford engine dimensions, If I put a 59 ab block for mock up, can I use a 85 HP block later, they have the same dimensions? early blocks like 85 HP, 59 blocks and 49 to 51 blocks?
    Thanks in advance....

The 85HP block (21 stud) has identical dimensions to 59AB. Just make sure you use the same water pumps, side mount type: '37-'48.

All basic dimensions to the machined surfaces of block are the same on all of them, meaning front cover flange, manifold surface, pan flange, length at rear for '32-48. I've never actually compared rear length of an early to an 8BA with Merc or truck bellhousing, but since such an engine falls right into the same spot they have to be very close or identical. A chevy block, incidentally, is really close dimensionally to a flathead endways...
Total engine length can vary a great deal based on choice of water pumps, fan, distributor, etc.
There is a considerable difference up front between a stock 8BA and an early with shortest single-belt setup once all bolt-on parts are there. If you start at rebuild time, you can very significantly improve fit of an 8BA into an early car like a Model A.

The trans bolts to the block on the early style. The same trans bolts to the bell housing of the late style, so they have to be equal at the rear. There are several choices for water pumps and pulleys in front, some longer than others.

At front, IMHO it is wise to fully convert to pre-49 setup if the thing is going in an early car with short engine compartment, Better ignition comes free with that swap...I did an old post with a lot of the dimensions in it. You can pick up several inches replacing '49 parts with the right early combos.
