I'm Thinking this is 1940's ? I have to buy all the other parts, perches, springs, hydraulic backing plates, tierods etc for a project.
It measures 50-1/4 between king pin centers,40-1/2 perch centers,12 inch brakes.

It's 42 - 47, someone else can narrow it down but that's all you really need to know...

  3. zibo shows how he narrowed an axle for his '40 coupe in a build thread. Fid the thread through the statistics in his profile.

Looks like somebody hung some wide 5 hubs/drums on there, make sure they are not '36
or you will need to shop for some hub/drums along with the juice brake backing plates.

Also, 1936 brake drums have three fins around their diameter and a very tall center snout for the bearings. The drums in the picture are not 1936.

50-1/4" Has anyone I.D. the axle? Seems awful wide for a Ford. I thought they were about 46" KP to KP.?

I believe the dogleg wishbone was used in 47-48 only, the 42-46 were straight like the previous years. Axles are same in all dimensions but the 47-48 ones have a boss for the tubular shocks between the kingpin and and perch bosses,

I did some looking around and it seems mid 1930's Ford axles are also about 50 inches KP to KP ?

  12. Nope- the after markets are 46" wide. Stock ford axles 28-36 are 50" plus 37-41 are 48-1/2" but the spring hanger holes are a wide 38-1/2. And the 46-48 is 50" plus with hangers at 41.

    After market ^^^
The axle trucked up has is 46-48.

While we are talking axles......This is a narrow frame project. I might want to mount the axle in front of the spring.....Or not depending on the height of the suspension...
Just as a rough guess, does anyone have a measurement from the top of the spring to the ground? Yes,many variables, but less just say a stock spring, axle and 600-16 tires.

Those axles are wide and strange looking on an open car. Im not saying that to bust your chops just genuine friendly advice. A 32-34 axle or a 28-31 axle are the only ones I would consider for an open car.
35 to 40 axles are plentiful but kinda ****y looking too.
Track width and axle shape are important aspects of a build. either way good luck

I hear ya but isn't the only axle less wide KP to KP is late 1930's? And only about 1-1/2 inches? Or do you mean the radius rods?

I don't remember the difference in widths king pin to king pin but I think the biggest variation is only like 1-1/4 in width but don't quote me. I am referring to the width between the king pin and spring perch boss.

its the small details that shape the vibe of the car. the earlier axles have always been more desireable probably due to thgrm being better to drop. its so much work building a car its worth putting the most desireable parts in that you can especially if the cost difference is minimal. It'll be cool either way I'm sure. Good luck

late merc and Lincoln the ones with the little swoop might be wider, the ones with the wider kingpins but that's neither here nor there

  18. I searched and searched the world over for the dimension you are looking for.
Best I could find is 2-1/2" between the bottom of the spring and top of axle.
The rest can change on any number of levels.
