Hi all, Ive searched and searched the archives and Google and have not had any luck finding the wiring diagram that tells me what wire goes to what on the headlight switch I have. I have a Napa 86-97 Ford Headlight switch, Part # 6C2T-11654-AA, and Pigtail Part # EC6. Attached is a drawing and a picture of the pigtail but I cannot figure out what wire goes where and of course, the colors on the wires are no help at all. Im using a Rebel Wiring kit and the instruction only show a generic drawing for a GM Headlight switch. My instructions are identical to those posted here: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/951941-rebel-wiring-harness-instructions.html I drew a picture of the switch and how the terminals are laid out and labeled and it is attached. The Switch has the following letter with the terminals: DN= D1= D2= ING= R= H= B1= B2= I= Instrument Lights Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you very much. -D
Use an ohm meter to check continuity and see if it would work if you ***ume: H headlights R running lights (park, tail) I instrument lights (gages) B2 battery power in
Try a Google image search for a Ford truck headlight switch. Not the same as the GM switch, which at one time was used with Ford, Mopar and GM.
Suirrel, I wired as suggested and that doesnt work. I ran the continuity tester and it seems to want the B1 and B1 to both have power going in. But that makes the park lights work, but when I pull the switch all the way out for headlights, it goes off and the park lights no longer want to work. 1950ChevySuburban, that helped a lot... I was able to switch the words around and found this link...... which is my switch. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/696113-headlight-problem.html Here is the new info I have found, but I still dont know how to wire it correctly to make the stupid thing work. Ive found this with the Multimeter testing the continuity: 1.Headlight switch pull half way out (Park light position) "B2" runs power to "R" 2.Headlight Switch pulled all the way out (headlight position) "B1" runs power to "H" So I wired it as such............... which is wrong somehow........ To the headlight switch: 14 ga Yellow wire going in that says "Headlight Power". (this is the power in) 14 ga Blue wire that goes to the switch that says "Dimmer Power". (This Im ***uming is Power out for the headlights) ( I split this off and ran to both B1 and B2) 14 ga brown that says "Taillights" (Im ***uming this is the taillights out) (I ran this to "R") 18ga brown labeled "Park Lights" Im ***uming this is the the running lights) (so I wired it together with the taillights) To the dimmer switch (Im pretty sure these are right asI followed the directions and I just need to wire the headlight switch correctly): 14 ga Blue wire that goes to the switch that says "Dimmer Power". (This Im ***uming is Power out for the headlights and followed it and it goes to the switch bundle above) (Instructions say to put it on the top post of the dimmer switch so I did) 14 ga light tan labeled "H L High Beam" (I put this on the left side of the dimmer per the instructions) 14 ga light green labeled "H L Low Beam" (I put this on the right side of the dimmer per the instructions) Attached are some more pictures, and how it is NOT supposed to be wired....which is how I did it. Squirrel or anyone, can you please give me more insight on how to properly run the wires to the headlight switch? Thanks. -D
Dirk...Please consider using a relay between the ford switch and the headlights. Here's why I say that. Worked as a mechanic for a big fleet for many years and we bought a lot of new ford pickups in those years. One of the first things to fail was the damned headlight switch. We didn't add any lights or any other load to those trucks and they weren't used in any weird way....just plain old pickups being used as pickups and not often at night either. The other common failures were the electronic ignition boxes but that's an entirely different subject. Using a relay will not only take a huge load off the headlight switch, it will give you brighter headlights..just sayin.
The only thing I guessed wrong is that you need to wire both B1 and B2 to the power source. But the thing about the R terminal not working when the headlights are on...hmmm....that's not good. You need tail lights when the headlights are on. Just out of curiousity, what does the IGN terminal connect to when you turn the switch on? just the DN terminal, or something else?
After all that, and I had a friend come over and verify, we tested and tested the contunity over and over, and it seemed to him to also be hooked up correctly, I went to Napa and got a mid 80s Chevy switch. Wired it per the instructions from my Haywire kit (the Rebel Wire kit didnt have much for instructions) and it works just fine. I guess the Ford switch was bad from the start. I saneded off one of the little side catch lug type thingy that holds the pigtail to the switch so they wouldnt take it back. The Ford switch made a comforting thud sound in the bottom of the trash can. Honestly, a HUGE THANK YOU to Squirrel, 1950Chevysuburban, and Rocky for taking the time to try to help. Rocky, Ill probably wire in a relay eventually, just need to learn how they work.
