I have a few 223 6cyls that I play around with, but Germ is more knowledgeable about these than I am.

Offenhouser still makes dual single and triple single intakes and finned aluminum valve covers for the 223. Clifford makes tube style headers and several different intakes, including 4bbl. This stuff should be available from anyone who distributes Offy and Clifford products.

Most performance cam shaft companies still offer cams for these.

Fenton used to make a cast iron header (very rare, very expensive), a dual single intake and a finned aluminum valve cover. Edmunds used to make a dual single intake and an aluminum valve cover. This stuff can be found at swapmeets and on the internet (e-bay etc).

There's probably some other stuff out there that I am not aware of.

I'm curious as to how a 223 fits in a Comet, they are quite a bit longer than the 144/170/200 style engines. I own a '62 Comet, and I just don't see how it would fit without quite a bit of modification. Post some pictures if you are able, I'm truly interested in seeing how it was done.

well from what im told its a 223. it doesnt look like the 170 i had in my falcon wagon its way bigger. someone did however have a small block chevy 400 in it for a while then dropped this in. the tunnel in front of the seat is gone and been replaced with sheet metal that looks like shit. ill be fixing that when i get it home.

i was thinkin about the 2 or 3 carb set up and maybe a bigger cam. i dont want to go too crazy with it since its gonna be my daily driver.

im not a ford guy this is only the 2nd ford ive ever had. if it was a chevy i know where to go to get anything. kinda like im venturing into uncharted waters!

Fenton made hi-lift rockers, too. A guy over the fordsix forums just picked up a set on eBay for next to nuthin'.

Baker made 'em too. A mild hop on the engine is easy but hi-lift rockers always seem to be the hardest to find.

I don't think Ford Six has anything for the 215/223/262. It's mostly geared to the "newer" sixes.

There's a sub forum on the 215/223/262 and orphan sixes we try to contribute to and offer work around's on getting stuff to fit.

I've only seen one Offy manifold (the double) at a swap meet and the guy wanted $200 with out linkage. Seen 'em go on eBay for 100 to 150, mostly with out linkage. The new Clifford intakes are water heated, the older ones on eBay aren't, generally. They'll go for 50 - 100 less than new ones. Clifford's headers are pretty reasonable but seem big in the compartment of the big body Fords. I don't know if they'd work on a 223 in a Comet.

What side is your intake on? If it is on the driverside then it is the 223 engine family. If it's on the passenger side with a removeable intake then it's a 240/300.

223's came in fairlanes, galaxies and trucks, If someone cobbled in a big six....the 223 has studs and nuts through the center of the valve cover, intake on the drivers side. 240-300 had perimeter attachment valve cover and intake on the pass. side. 170-200 had the integral intake on the pass. side. Of course all the above mentioned is null and void if your in OZ or other places I've never been. If it had a sbc in it who knows whats in there now! [IMG]

Real simple if it has a intake that unbolts it's a 240 or 300. If it has a log looking intake that is a cast part of the head(non-removeable ) then it's a 144/170/200/250.

A long long time ago after my 7HA 6cyl L head Ford expired I built a ohv Ford six I used a 262 block as it will bore .125 to 4 inch a 223 will not. I then used 327 chevrolet pistons with a stock rod had Schneider grind me a cam I twisted the shit out of this motor.great fun but after the crank broke I went to a 289 V8.

you have a 170 in the comet.......

You can modify a 240 truck distro with your 223 distro gear, and you will shit on the new performance of that 223 motor........

FACTORY FORD early DISTROS are like a LIMP cock when a SLUT is READY to BANG..

rickyracer knows about that saga whenever SAVAGE SPEED spreads his he/she PISS FLAPS all DECKED out in his SISTERS prom DRESS).....

It's a fun inliner and it's really fun to watch DUMBASSES assume its a 235 chevy when they see some VINTAGE speed PARTS on it,,,,

I dont really like 235 chevy sixes... and have messed with plenty of them

The fenton HEADER for 223-262 is REALLY rare. as is the FENTON intake the 2x2 was for the 97's...
They both work a a WHOLE unit, You need BOTH pieces because the FENTON intake has the HEAT RISER from the HEADER like the FACTORY set it up...

the BEST crank is the 262 truck crank, and the BEST block is the 57-59 223 TRUCK block,,,,, the weird thing is that the BEST head to MODIFY is the 54-55 earlier ones....

I have a large stach of 223 speed parts, even some never used fenton CAMS, and several sets of the HIGH LIFT ROCKERS,,,

You can also use 57 y-block rocker arms,,,, if you wanted to...

I Built a CUBAN ENGINEERED street race motor several years ago... when I was a mEMBER of "INLINERS INTERNATIONAL'''', and I PORTED the HEAD by hand... ran a 3/4 cam, 312 push rods, dual intake with 97's and EXHAUST heat............made the 240 truck distro,,, because an OLD CIRCLE TRACK guy ran the 223 in the 50s and USE to BEAT everyone,,,,,(he told me the secret)..................Ran an old STELLINGS (i think stellings) oil punp which was removed from an old SPRINT CAR motor, and FABRICATED to fit,,,,,,,I had a GUY that helped me and he made SEALS for the MOTOR,,,, because the PRESSURE was kinda INSANE...................couldnt give you a QUARTER mile TIME,,, but around the street with a 4.11 and a 4 speed,,, no FLATHEAD of 235 chevy could run with it LIGHT to LIGHT..

I could shift at 5000 grand sometimes higher... with no problem

    I also
used a TURBO and a 4 barrel to up the stakes and GRENADED quite a few of them also...

It's one of my favorite engine BECAUSE it's UNIQUE, and the first one we ever fucked with was JUST because someone left it in a BARN so it was free.....

what do I know I build shitboxes and write SUICIDE notes for entertaiment

Germ if you feel like imparting more knowledge and how-to's on the 223 please, please do. Most people look at it say "I'd put a V8 in it". I knew there was someone out there to prove 'em wrong.

I can help you out, but I dont see what you dont understand?

I will take charge and say that I think I'm one of the experts of 6 cylinder crap on this board, both RACE and both FUN..

    LAUGH as you PLEASE

I have KNOWLEDGE and KNOW my SPEED PARTS,,
and have BUILT plenty of VINTAGE MOTORS,,,
    '
this has been a part of my life for years,

I was in the INLINERS INTERNATIONAL before I was old enough to DRIVE..

And have RACED sprint cars, and speedway bikes..

What do you DESIRE to learn or know,,,????
I decided that the 223-262 was my favorite......
That doesnt mean that I havent built the others,,, I just lost interest in motors newer then 62,,,,,,,,

My mentor was GARY COPE, and my TEACHER was an old CIRCLE TRACK RACER named DANIEL HORNE.....

I have a 223 with three speed and 3;56 s.I like the way it runs for street driven. My problems is that when I'm runnig down the highway about 65 or 70 Its rappin pretty tight. I have been wondering if a T-5 swap is possible and if so would I still have good low gears for street and better highway gears?

    Thanks

From what I've heard, this guy John Mummert at Ford Y Block makes a conversion kit to mate a 223 to T-5. Go down the page a little and you'll see it listed.
