Hello. I have a stock 40 flathead powered 30 coupe, and have kept my rear axle stock. I did this because I do not have the funds to convert to an open setup, and converting a newer banjo via spring over and driveshaft/ torque tube/ radius rod modifications also costs a pretty penny. Given that I find a better carrier that is not rusted, are there any further modifications that can be made that will prevent breakage? Gussets, etc?
Been a long time since I fooled with anything with a stock Model "A" rear axle under it. But as I remember, the weak point was the axle itself and the wheel key(s). All I ever had were behind bangers, though I feel if you remember what's under there and treat it with respect till you are in high gear and the clutch is engaged, you'll get by. But just as sure as you spin it up in first and slam second with a quick clutch engagement something is gonna give with a V8 in it.
I ran a stock rear end on my 28 with a flathead and had no problems but didn't abuse it. The axles are the same diameter as the V8 banjo, the carrier' ring and pinion are smaller but will hold up. The axle keys are the same from 28 to 48 so they aren't really a problem. If you are running a mild flathead and don't try to do burnouts it will survive.
