I need some expert advice. I recently had my trans and torque converter both rebuilt. The trans would go into drive and move forward but reverse would not engage. I adjusted the rear band adjustmen bolt on the right side of the trans case. The trans now goes into reverse. So i backed the car out and started to take it down the street for its 1st test drive. As soon as I pulled out and gave it some gas it started to go then suddenly bogged down and almost stopped. I left off the gas and then reapplied the gas and it started to go and it did the same then again. I put the car back in the car port and jacked the rear end and put it on stands. I put the car in the drive and and it does the same thing on the stand. It sounds and feels like it is trying to go in out of drive...like it is trying to engage reverse or park at the same tim. any help would be greatly appreciated.
First thing: Buy the Ford manual appropriate for your car. Second: Before anyone can help, what Ford-O-Matic IS this?? Ford made both two and three speed versions. Third: It does sound like the trans is trying to engage drive and reverse at the same time. Fourth: I, personally, would never let anyone rebuild my trans, and this is why. The bands should have been adjusted before you received it, and if they needed adjustment after running in, THAT would be part of the service. You will probably need to revisit the rebuilder and get this sorted. Cosmo
soosen the band back up, you got 2 things applied at same time you may have to do a rereapair on this trans as someting is not working also set the bands with the specifications
The trans was rebuilt by a professional and he is also the best trans guy i know. I would get him to try and help but he is about 350 'miles away. Does the 55 model fordomatic have a vacum line on it? I know some of the later 1's did.
I had the same issue. Have the valve body checked something is stuck.' Mine did same thing cleaned valve body worked great. Good luck Ray
Double check that the pin which engages the "manual valve" may be in the wrong place; I ran into that with a customer car....it only had reverse and park. 4TTRUK
Get the manual, and re-adjust both the Lo/Rev band and Intermediate band. The intermediate band is adjusted after removing the pan. Next check the TV rod to make sure it is adjusted correctly. IIRC, in 55 Furd made a 1st gear (Lo ratio) start in DR possible by quickly pushing accelerator pedal to the floor at a stop. This start uses the Lo/Rev band to make the 1st gear start. However if the TV is not adjusted correctly, and is too short, you will get a 1st gear start no matter where the accelerator pedal is. So get that adjusted too. No vacuum on this model.
I put some sea foam trans treatment and got the trans working good. I think something in the valve body was stuck. But after the trans cooled down i lost reverse and drive started acting up again. I do need to readjust the trans linkage. I think it is to short right now.
