Hi, My name is Vinny I am from Pittsburgh area. Recently had a problem which caused a fire. Fortunately i caught it in time. My "two speed" Fordomatic transmission pushed the dipstick out of the tube and puked fluid in large amounts all over my exhaust. I was climbing a gradual grade and noticed a slight loss of power. I down shifted and all hell broke loose. I am new to this automatic and was wondering if anyone could help. Its in a 54 Merc with a 292 Y-block. Are the mercomatic and fordomatic the same ??

Probably the best site for info on a Ford-O-Matic is here http://www.network54.com/Forum/260730/ let us know what you find out, sadly since the Ford-O-Matic has been out of production for 50+ years so are a lot of the folks that worked on them.

Vinny I am not experienced on the fordomatic, although i have one I just pulled from my 53. I had a ford p/u 460/c6 when I pulled hard it wouldpuke oil and vapor to the point of looking like it was on fire. My problem was the vent on the trans was plugged causing it to build pressure! I know the f/m has a vent you might check it.

The vent wasnt plugged but it seemed as though the cap on the vent was worn and would actually seal the vent when pressure was applied. I took the cap off and replaced it with a hose which dumps over the frame instead of on the exhaust. I dropped the pan and cleaned the filter and what little sludge was in the pan. Checked the air intake screen and put some type F in it. Everything seems to be good so far. Thanks for the help guys.
