Continuing on my build. I have the correct speedo "turtle" to bolt onto my torque tube. Found it on evil bay. So my question is how freely should the gear in it spin by hand. It seems a little stiff to me right now. It has been cleaned (looks like it was blasted). I'm figuring maybe some media got into it or something or maybe they are supposed to be a little stiff to turn. It's not really stiff, but it doesn't "spin" easy either. Thinking of soaking it in some penetrating oil for a bit and see what happens.

thoughts?

Use solvent AND detergent and water...if it has been gl*** bead blasted, only soap type stuff will clear it out.
They should be pretty free, but either 70 years of ancient lubricants leaking into it or idiot destructive cleaning will stiffen it up.
By the way, when cleaning rusted meachanisms I find that old fashioned liquid wrench is very good at floating stuff out of tight places.

Thanks Bruce,

I like Kroil myself, but have been fond of liquid wrench since a kid. works great to take construction adhesive (PL) off your hands too.

In my book, Kroil is better on the freeing fasteners gig, but the old Liquid wrench seems to produce crud flowing out of tiny hinges and pivots better.

[IMG][/IMG] if you suspect that it has been bead blasted, i would recommend that you dis***emble the unit and clean it properly. it is a very simple task. using a very sharp s****er, wedge it between the turtle body and the stamped carbon steel retainer, using a small hammer, tap the s****er until the retainer starts to move, continue prying the retainer until comes out of the turtle body. remove the shaft with a needle nose pliers, the gear will fall out. see images. clean, lube, re-***emble in reverse order. done.
