I have been offered a T5 that is fitted to the Ford Mustang,It is all brand new parts rebuilt and a real good price. What I need to know for definate, is, can it fit my flathead. All the adaptors seem to be for the Chevy variant of this box. What are the differences in the two different models, are they major or just slight.

The box/motor are for my 36 coupe and the shifter on this box is at the front and would be perfect .Is this a viable swap or is it a no go?

    Thanks.

Something isn't right. You say the shifter is at the front and would perfect for your 36 ch***is. All Mustang boxes left the factory with the shifter in the rear, very close to the drive shaft yoke. Maybe someone already converted it, putting a S-10 tail case on a Mustang main case and gears, not hard to do.

Main problem is that as indicated the adapters to hook a T-5 to a flathead are for the T-5s with the 'GM' (low and wide) bolt pattern main case. The Ford T-5s (and GM 93-95 models years) have a tall and narrow bolt pattern. Only way to fix (other than buying another complete trans) is to buy a GM bolt pattern main case, dis***emble the trans you have, and load all the parts in the GM main case. Warning. Most Mustang T-5s are World Cl*** (WC), but many GM cases are Non-World Cl*** (NWC), and WC gears will not fit NWC cases, and visa versa.

You might want to look at 5speeds.com and also garage-scene.home.att.net/t5_install_identifying.htm

That is all I think I know.

Sort of both really...it`s a french flathead, so it`s 8ba/59a...basically all 8ba with the built- in 59a bell housing.

    rodrelic...thanks for the link.

    Talk to Patrick at Wilcap.

    http://www.wilcap.com/webdoc8.html

They basically take the Offenhauser adapter and add an adapter plate so you can bolt up your Ford T5 to your flathead. When my RPU project was on the front burner, I planned to put a TKO 5-speed behind my 50 8BA flathead. I was discussing it via email with Wilcap. I was going to use the TKO instead of the T5 because it will take more torque than the T5 plus it gives you 3 choices of where to put the shifter. With the T5 you must get the S10 tailshaft housing so the shifter is at the front of the tailshaft housing. Its still close to the seat in an early Ford body. The TKO front shifter location almost the same location as the the 39 floor shifter 3-speed.

Do a search here and there are several threads which address what you want to do. Try this one. There are others.
