Ive got a '59 Edsel with a two speed automatic and a 223 straight six. I am in need of a trans for this thing. Im having some trouble figuring out what other years/cars/trucks have this transmission. I belive my trans has a removable bellhousing. I recently picked up a Y-block trans of similar vintage but its alot bigger than the original. Im looking to get this on the road ASAP so I dont want to do a lot of fabricating getting another style of trans in there. It doesnt make much sence to me to try and mate the V8 trans to the six. If it is even possible.
I would have to check on this myself, but the trans you speak of sounds like a Ford shift-o-matic 2 speed auto. If my research is correct, this was used in my Folcon originally too. I am not familiar with your 6 cylinder, but I think a C-4 might be what you need to find. f you have a friend with a 302 or a 351 W, make a template from the back of that block and check it with yours to see if these are the same. The C-4 also has a removable bell housing, so it might just be a case aof putting a C-4 minus bell housing on your motor with your bell housing. I have not had any exposure to the older Edsels.
Black 4 dr? You bought that car? I think that the setup is totally different. I gave away a decent Fordomatic, the Y has the similar to Fe bell, but Im not sure about the 6. I am pretty sure that the bell is not interchangable between Fordomatic and C4 tho... If you decide to get involved I do have a 302 and C4 Id part with...
Yeah thats the one...........uh oh why...........lol Do the Falcon/Mustang Fordomatics have a removable bell or do they share the same bell as the earlier sixes like the 223? Im sure I could find one of those somwhere. How about trucks?
All Ford-O-Matics & "true" Cruise-O-Matics have removable bellhousings. (I say true, because the '66 C6 was known as the "Cruise-O-Matic C6", & the C4 was occasionally labeled as a Cruise-O as well). You actually have a Cruise-O-Matic, the second generation of the Ford-O-Matic. Edsel called it something else than Cruise-O-Matic, as did Mercury. In most applications it was a true three-speed, but behind some sixes it was actually a two-speed. You likely have an aluminum bell, where most of the bells are cast iron. So far as the larger case....there are three different sizes of case. You would have the smallest, the FX. The Y block should have the middle size, the MX, which is roughly 3/8" longer through the main body, not counting the bell or tail housing. The MX should physically bolt up to your bell....although mounts, driveshaft, etc. may or may not work. It may (or may not) be easier to rebuild the trans you have....they are fairly simple to rebuild either way. Hope that helps a bit.
