  1. I've seen a lot of people do it single, can't really remember seeing one with the support on both sides...

Could the difference be the coil overs?? Should I expect more force to them then to the traditional shock and transverse spring set up??

I guess it would be hard to get screws that long...
Had problems getting the 4 inch long ones that I use right now ;)

What are your thoughts about that issue??

spot on DRuss, I have only ever seen shocks in single shear when they are just shocks, not coil overs. Though I suppose if a high strength/high tensile bolt was used, it would reduce the risk of anything snapping.

I just went back to the picture, are the upper bolts mounted through that crossmember? And how is the lower bolt fitted to the axle?
I've had two cars running rear coilovers, one of which I built. Both had the coilovers mounted in double shear.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works Martin, but i would hate to see such a sweet truck hit the deck when a bolt snaps on I81

Common pratice they way you have the coil overs mounted.
    No problem.
Look at any "commercial " 1932 chassis for a example.

  4. Damn man! This is looking great! That rear 3/4 shot is super! (...he exclaimed, exclaimily!!)

Fuxl, Where did you get the bed on your truck from and what did it run you?

    Thanks

  7. very cool man

  8. Thanks guys!

I got my bed from Norb at Last Refuge and it was about $700.
    Also I got it after 3 weeks, so I can't complain ;)

I was rethinking this whole shear situation.
There is a tube running through the rear crossmember, where the upper shock mount is bolted. So there is a lot of surface.
As far as I know shearing would be more likely when there is small surfaces and high force.
I might add one of these tubes to lower mount though...

The truck is coming along great. It looks awesome. Can't wait to see more.

  14. I ordered it longer since I wanted to expand the wheelbase, but then I went this route and shortened it about 3 inches.
Yes I assembled it myself, but it's still just mocked up.
It's not welded solid yet. This way it doesn't eat up so much space in the garage;)

Thanks again for your nice commends.
I'll have my motor and transmission rebuilt in the near future,
so look out for new pics ;)

  15. After dropping off my Motor at Page Customs yesterday, I picked up my new gas tank.
Big thanks to the House of Fab in Ashland VA.

    Here's some pics:

    Martin,

If you replace the camshaft and the exhaust manifolds for something a little wilder than stock you may want to hold on to them. They are Starfire specific (highest HP in '65 Olds lineup)and probably worth something to a restoration guy.

  17. The tank fits in there great. How many gallons does it hold?

  20. Thanks for your interest guys!
The motor is out for rebuild, the rear end too...
Just got the housing, backing plates and drums back from the powder coater.
Now I am working on the frame, clean it up some to make room for the the exhaust and stuff...
Also need to put the new front crossmember in...

Dan: the tank holds about 20 Gallons, that's at least what I calculated. We'll see how much it'll be in reality.

And jes, I'll for sure keep all the old stuff from the motor!!
Maybe one day I want to run it stock again :D

  27. Great build Martin! I'm diggin the stump puller Olds mill, brings back memories of being a kid and going for rides with my dads buddys in their huge Olds cruisers. The carbs made such a loud sucking noise you'd swear leaves were getting sucked off of trees as we ripped by.
    So any updates lately?

So I'll definitely have a problem driving my truck in the fall, right?? ;)

I am hoping to be able to pick up the motor after rebuild this week.
(at least that's what they keep telling me)
So after that I can finish up the frame, cab, bed and gas tank mounts and go from there.
I'll post up some new pics one I get that done!

    Hey Martin,
Let me know when you're coming to Richmond to pick up your motor. I haven't been to that shop yet and maybe we can grab lunch.
    Best, David
