1952-59 Ford Ford V6 as 54 Customline Engine upgrade?

I have a Ford 4.0L V-6, 145 HP with a 4-spd auto trans w/OD, in a 92 Exployer. Does anyone know if it would be a good upgrade option for my 54 Customline?

I had a '94 Ranger with that same engine it wasn't all that great on gas like one would think I don't think you would be happy with the power output and there is almost no aftermarket goodies for it and you would have to fab up mounts to fit it plus adapt the computer harness where as a 302 AOD swap can be done in a '54 with over the counter parts for cheap.

Not to be that guy, but why would you want to? The 4.0L in 94 explorer I got to drive during this snowpocalypse was a total dog, and loved gas. I'd say you'll be happier with a small block ford, but why not a Y?

No worries, I'm over the cheapo, use what I have idea. I'll go with 302 when I get ready to do the swap, concentrating on the 12 V conversion now. Thanks all for bringing me back to earth.

I just swapped a Exploder 4.0 into my BroncoII rock crawler. Its alot of work with the harness and emissions stuff. Its a big upgrade over my old 2.9. I know my Bronco is quite a bit heavier than a 54, but it only gets low teens for MPG in overdrive and there are no aftermarket goodies that dont require some serious cash.

I'll let you know how my 12V conversion goes. I'm going with an EZ-wire universal 21 circuit harness. The 21 circuit is definately overkill, but a friend bought it and found he didn't have space for the fusebox in his rod so I got it on the cheap. I've heard good things about the EZ-wire kits and they are well marked, every 5-6" and the instructions are straightforward. Good luck.

We have an 05 Explorer and it sure isn't easy on the fuel or have much power. Glad you changed your mind. Now a new Eco boost V6 would be pretty cool but probably not HAMB friendly.

thanks trikepapa I'll be looking to see how it worked out for you. From what I'm told I can use all my wiring just change the bulbs to 12vt bulbs but the hard part is going to be putting the voltage regulators or whatever in the dash for the guages and on the heater motor and stuff like that. I pick up on mechanical stuff pretty easy but the electrical side is another story lol

 

There have been recent posts on installing the gauge regulators,it's EZ also you can go to Graingers and pickup a 12 volt blower motor that is a bolt in, the part number is listed too.Do a really good check of the old wiring after 56 years that cloth insulation can turn to mush and cause problems.
